TITLE:
1st Grade Teacher•Talbot Community School
POSITION OVERVIEW
Portland Public Schools seeks an energetic, enthusiastic, and creative 1st Grade Teacher to join the team at Talbot Community School. We are looking for a teacher who has a passion for working with children, brings an equity-oriented approach to their instruction, and who holds all students to high expectations. Strong candidates will have experience in conducting rigorous inquiry-based instruction across content areas. We seek a teammate who is collaborative and open to giving and receiving feedback in service of the shared goals of the school and the district.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Under direction of the
Principal:
Plans and provides for appropriate learning experiences for students Provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of individuals to ensure success for every student Supervises students in a variety of school related settings Monitors and evaluates student outcomes Communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff and community Develops, selects, and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students Maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of PPS curriculum, techniques for integrating curriculum, PPS policies, and effective standards based instructional practices Understanding of the teaching/learning/assessing process Ability to create a welcoming environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of all students Ability to plan and implement standards based learning experiences for students Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives, multicultural education and current best practices in ELL instruction Ability to monitor and evaluate student outcomes and take responsibility for student growth Ability to infuse technology into the curriculum Strong equity orientation and an openness to personal reflection on deepening awareness of personal bias and being culturally responsive and humble Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, staff and community Openness and desire to collaborate with colleagues and administration, including sharing lessons, assessments, student work and data A growth mindset, believing sincerely that all students can rise to high expectations A passion for differentiating in support of ensuring all students meet goals Ability to maintain appropriate records and follow required procedures and practices Experience with
PBIS, SEL
curriculum and restorative practices
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in the applicable field of education from an accredited college or university Experience with CKLA, EL-ELA and Illustrative Mathematics curricula is a plus Multilingual proficiency is a plus
CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
Maine State teacher certificate with at least one of the following endorsements (more info): 020 General Elementary (K-6 or K-8) 029 Early Elementary (K-3) Maine State fingerprint (CHRC) authorization (more info) •if you already have an active teacher certification, you do not need a separate CHRC as this clearance is tied to your teacher certification

Gerald E. Talbot Community School is a Pre-K through Grade 5 school of nearly 400 students named in honor of Gerald E. Talbot, one of the most cherished and respected community leaders in Portland, ME. We are proud of our diverse population of learners from around the world, who speak 23 different languages.
