To Be Determined Job Description Starting 2026-2027 School Year | North Bennington, Vermont The Hiland Hall School is an independent progressive school where students ages 5-14 learn in a multi-age classroom setting. Our work is grounded in close observation of children, careful record keeping, and reflection. Our approach is student-centered, allowing teachers to develop curriculum in an emergent and collaborative way. Growing out of the Prospect School tradition, and inspired by the educational work of John Dewey and other progressive educators, The Hiland Hall School is committed to fostering curiosity, responsibility, and intellectual engagement in an atmosphere of trust and respect. One Full-Time Teacher Applicants should submit:
  • A letter of interest that includes: A statement describing their understanding of progressive education and how it connects to their educational values; Relevant teaching experience, work experience, or life experiences that demonstrate a commitment to hands-on learning, inquiry, and meaningful engagement with children.
  • A résumé; The teacher's primary assignment will be with the Elementary group, while all Hiland Hall teachers participate in the shared life of the school and work with students across its age groups.
This position is particularly well suited to an emerging or early-career educator interested in developing their practice alongside experienced progressive teachers. Applicants with additional teaching experience are also very welcome. The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
  • Intellectual curiosity, enthusiasm, humility, and a desire to continue learning;
  • Interest in progressive education, inquiry-based learning, and emergent curriculum;
  • A willingness to teach across disciplines and follow student interests as they emerge;
  • The ability to take a descriptive stance when observing children and their work;
  • Interest in documenting student learning through narrative observation and written reports. We do not use traditional grades to communicate student progress;
  • Comfort working closely with colleagues, families, and volunteers;
  • The ability to support individual learners while contributing to a strong classroom community;
  • Classroom leadership skills and an understanding that discipline is proactive, restorative, and rooted in relationships;
  • Interest in multi-age learning environments;
  • Strong communication skills and sound professional judgment.
