The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (
ChBE:
https://che.eng.ua.edu/ ) and the Lee J. Styslinger Jr. College of Engineering (

https://ua.edu/ )invite applications for multiple tenure-track and tenured faculty positions at all ranks, including Assistant, Associate, and Full Professorlevels, within the ChBE department. Candidates with prestigious achievements in their field and exceptional national andinternational reputations will be eligible for consideration for significant endowment support through appointment as an Endowed ShelbyDistinguished Professor ( https://provost.ua.edu/the-shelby-endowment-for-distinguished-faculty/ ). These Endowed Shelby Distinguished Professorpositions are one of the most prestigious honors bestowed upon faculty at The University of Alabama. Towards achieving excellence in all our efforts, the ChBE departmentand the Styslinger College of Engineering seek to hire faculty that can contribute to both: (1) build upon existing strengths in theDepartment, College, and University and (2) expand the scope of research within the department, College, and UA as awhole. Candidates with research interests across ALL domains relevant to chemical and biological engineering are encouraged to apply.

Current research strengths within ChBE include, but are not limited to, biotechnology, bioengineering, membranes and membrane-basedseparations, battery materials and energy storage, electrochemical systems, catalysis and reaction engineering, and soft matter. To furtherbroaden capabilities of the department, candidates with particular research emphasis and interests in synthetic biology, metabolicengineering, biomanufacturing (including bioprocess automation, sensing, and control), AI materials discovery, or automated laboratories areof particular interest for one or more of these positions and are strongly encouraged to apply. To complement current research strengths inthe department, candidates with demonstrated research focus on process optimization, supply chain, safety, and life cycle assessment arealso sought and are encouraged to apply. https://poly-sm.ua.edu/ ); the UA High Performance Computing and Data Center, and to further strengthen the department'sinvolvement in these activities and to leverage the extensive resources available through these organizations, candidates with researchemphasis and interests in related fields including water modeling and technologies, materials for extreme environments, batteries and energystorage, and computational and experimental materials science research are sought and strongly encouraged to apply. The ChBEdepartment has thriving programs at both the undergraduate and graduate level. The department offers a B.S. in Chemical Engineeringundergraduate degree, a M.S. in Chemical Engineering, a Ph. D. in Chemical Engineering, and a new M.S. degree in Biomedical Engineering. Thedepartment's undergraduate chemical engineering program has consistently been one of the top-10 largest programs in the country for manyyears, with a current average enrollment each year over the past five years of more than 400 undergraduate chemical engineering students. Inaddition to its large size, the department boasts a tremendously bright and outstanding undergraduate student body recruited from all acrossthe nation (e.g. approximately 35% of program undergraduates are from Alabama with the remaining 65% of undergraduates in the program fromout-of-state, with all representing the top graduates in their schools from both across the state and across the country). At any giventime, amongst its terrific student body, the ChBE undergraduate population typically includes between 70 and 100 National Merit Finalistsand Scholars. Graduates from the department are highly sought after by major companies across the U.S., as well as by the prominent U.S.institutes of higher education, where a significant fraction of our graduates pursue advanced graduate degrees with excellentoutcomes. The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering and the College of Engineering consider teaching, research, andservice as the three critical and complimentary portions of their overall mission and the ability of our faculty to contribute to all threemission elements is considered essential. Candidates must demonstrate a clear potential to successfully develop, lead, and extramurally funda highly productive research group with significant scholarly impact in a focus area with long term potential to further build upon therapid rise and great success of the ChBE department and the UA College of Engineering. An ability to collaborate with existing faculty inthe key focus areas both within the ChBE Department and the College of Engineering, as well as potential colleagues across the campus, ishighly desirable. The Styslinger College of Engineering and the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering pride themselves onthe outstanding educational experience provided to their students, and thus faculty candidates must demonstrate an ability to develop andteach classes at both the undergraduate and graduate level in the faculty member's area(s) of expertise. In addition to their specificresearch fields, faculty candidates should be able to teach courses that support the delivery and accreditation of the Department's coredegree programs.
