Humanities Teacher and Gifted and Talented Coordinator
JOB DESCRIPTION
| Updated September 2026 Position Full time exempt Reports to High School Principal Status At will Salary $50,000 to $60,000 plus benefits About New Legacy Charter School New Legacy Charter School is a free public school in Aurora, Colorado, serving approximately 95 high school students and 45 children in an on-site Early Learning Center. The school supports pregnant and parenting students and other young people who benefit from a small, relationship-centered, competency-based learning environment. Our mission is to offer a rigorous, relevant, and engaging education that prepares students to raise healthy children and succeed in college, careers, and adulthood. Our vision is for young families to build a legacy of education leading to compelling careers, financial independence, and positive parenting. Position Summary The Humanities Teacher and Gifted and Talented Coordinator teaches Reading, Writing, and Communicating, social studies, civics, and Holocaust and Genocide Studies while helping students build literacy, inquiry, and communication skills through relevant projects. The position also coordinates New Legacy's Gifted and Talented program so identified students receive appropriate plans, services, progress monitoring, and opportunities for advanced learning. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in English, social studies, education, or a related field. Colorado teaching license or willingness to work toward licensure with support from school administration. Ability to teach diverse learners through culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and student-centered practices. Strong organization, communication, collaboration, and technology skills. Core Responsibilities Humanities Instruction Teach Reading, Writing, and Communicating with an emphasis on literacy development, and teach required civics and Holocaust and Genocide Studies content. Use project-based and competency-based learning to develop students' reading, writing, research, communication, collaborative thinking, and inquiry skills. Design rigorous and relevant learning tasks that connect academic standards and competencies to students' interests, identities, career goals, and real-world experiences. Use the workshop model of instruction, including an engaging opening, skill-based mini lesson, collaborative or independent practice, and a meaningful debrief. Create regular opportunities for academic conversation, collaboration, reflection, revision, and student ownership of learning. Use formative and summative assessment, maintain an accurate competency-based gradebook, and provide timely feedback that moves learning forward. Establish a safe, inclusive, and productive classroom; reinforce positive behavior and respond to concerns through early intervention and restorative practices. Collaborate with instructional leaders, advisors, student-support staff, and teachers to plan instruction and coordinate supports. Gifted and Talented Coordination Serve as New Legacy Charter School's Gifted and Talented Coordinator. Coordinate gifted identification, programming, documentation, and progress monitoring in alignment with school procedures and applicable Colorado requirements. Develop, maintain, and monitor Advanced Learning Plans in collaboration with students, families, teachers, and school leaders. Support teachers in providing appropriate differentiation, advanced learning opportunities, and strength-based instruction for gifted learners. Maintain accurate records, communicate required information and timelines, and participate in relevant training and meetings. Schoolwide Responsibilities Build strong, appropriate relationships with students and families and communicate proactively about progress, strengths, needs, and supports. Take attendance, document student progress, maintain accurate records, and participate in student-support and staff meetings. Select and adapt texts, technology, media, and community resources that are relevant to student needs and interests. Participate in at least one school committee and contribute to a collaborative professional learning community. Follow Board and school policies and help maintain a safe, organized, and welcoming learning environment. Use current workplace technology, including Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Infinite Campus, and other school systems. Perform additional duties as assigned, which may include student supervision, lunch duty, school events, and professional learning. Mission Alignment Successful New Legacy staff members: Commit to the school's mission, vision, and two-generation model. Recognize and build on students' strengths, assets, identities, and lived experiences. Understand that healthy relationships are essential when supporting students who have experienced disengagement or barriers to school success. Use restorative practices to address conflict, repair harm, and strengthen community. Engage thoughtfully in learning and conversations about equity, inclusion, power, privilege, and culturally responsive practice. Contribute to a professional culture grounded in respect, trust, honesty, flexibility, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Physical and Work Requirements Frequently sit, stand, and walk, including extended periods at a computer or in a classroom setting. Use standard classroom, instructional, and office equipment. Participate in meetings, interviews, conferences, and professional learning, including occasional travel or overnight travel. Drive a personal vehicle when needed for school business, community events, purchasing, or learning-site visits. Compensation and Benefits The salary range is $50,000 to $60,000, commensurate with experience. Benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance; retirement; and paid time off.
