Job Type:
Full-time | Monday-Friday | 8:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Facilitate Learning That Matters. What happens when middle school scholars discover that reading, writing, speaking, and listening are not simply skills for English class—but powerful tools for understanding the world, questioning what they encounter, communicating what they believe, and advocating for themselves and others? That is English Language Arts at Odyssey Atlanta. We are seeking dynamic middle grades ELA educators who can help scholars become stronger readers, thoughtful writers, confident communicators, and critical consumers of information. At Odyssey, literacy provides scholars with the tools to investigate meaningful questions, examine multiple perspectives, make sense of evidence, develop informed ideas, and communicate those ideas with clarity and purpose. Odyssey Atlanta is a transformational academic enrichment program serving motivated scholars from Atlanta Public Schools and the greater Atlanta community. For more than 20 years, Odyssey has created joyful, challenging summer learning experiences designed to expand students' ambitions and empower them on a successful journey through college and a fulfilling career. The Middle School Experience Odyssey's Middle School curriculum is organized around a Justice Framework that invites scholars to examine how environmental, social, economic, and technological systems influence people, communities, opportunities, and well-being. Across rising grades 6-8, scholars engage in interdisciplinary, project-based learning experiences that connect academic content to authentic issues and challenges. Depending on grade level, scholars may investigate questions related to sustainable cities and environmental justice, truth and bias, evidence and civic responsibility, technology and cybersecurity, entrepreneurship, innovation, and economic opportunity. ELA is an essential part of that exploration. Scholars read literary and informational texts, conduct research, evaluate sources and evidence, examine perspective and bias, engage in meaningful discussion, develop arguments, write for authentic purposes, and present ideas to real audiences. The goal is not simply to produce better readers and writers. It is to help young people understand that literacy creates agency. What You'll Do As an Odyssey Middle School ELA Teacher, you will create a learning environment where literacy becomes a vehicle for inquiry, expression, discovery, and action.
You will:
Design and facilitate engaging ELA instruction connected to interdisciplinary project-based learning Strengthen scholars' reading comprehension, writing, vocabulary, research, speaking, listening, and communication skills Select and use compelling literary and informational texts that deepen scholars' understanding of the questions and issues they are investigating Help scholars distinguish among fact, opinion, perspective, bias, argument, and evidence Teach scholars to evaluate sources, synthesize information, develop claims, support ideas with credible evidence, and communicate conclusions effectively Create authentic opportunities for writing, including argumentative, informational writing, reflection, storytelling, research, presentations, and other forms of communication Use discussion, inquiry, visible-thinking routines, collaboration, and student-centered learning to make thinking visible Help scholars develop their individual voices while learning to listen to, question, and respectfully engage with perspectives different from their own Guide scholars toward meaningful products, presentations, and culminating experiences designed for audiences beyond the classroom Extend learning beyond the classroom through field experiences during weeks 2- 4 that connect scholars' projects to people, places, institutions, and ideas across the Atlanta community Use assessment data and daily observations to identify scholars' needs, differentiate instruction, and document academic growth Collaborate with fellow teachers, Odyssey leadership, community partners, and field experts to create cohesive interdisciplinary learning experiences Build a classroom culture where scholars feel known, challenged, supported, and confident taking intellectual risks Bring energy, professionalism, flexibility, creativity, and joy to our summer learning community Who Thrives at Odyssey? We are looking for English Language Arts educators who believe literacy should help young people make meaning - not simply complete assignments. Strong Odyssey teachers are curious themselves. They enjoy asking big questions, connecting literature and informational texts to the world scholars inhabit, collaborating across disciplines, experimenting with new ideas, and helping adolescents discover that their voices have value. You may be a great fit if you: Believe deeply in the potential of every scholar and maintain high expectations while providing meaningful support Know how to build authentic relationships with middle school students Love literature, language, writing, discussion, and the exchange of ideas Can help adolescents develop confidence as readers, writers, thinkers, and communicators Understand that rigorous learning and joyful learning can and should exist together Are excited by interdisciplinary and project-based teaching rather than relying solely on traditional instructional approaches Value student voice, inquiry, critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity Can facilitate thoughtful conversations around complex topics in developmentally appropriate ways Are comfortable using digital tools to support research, writing, collaboration, and learning Are reflective, resourceful, flexible, and eager to grow alongside other educators Have demonstrated success supporting the academic growth of students from historically underserved communities Qualifications Bachelor's degree in English, English Language Arts Education, Middle Grades Education, or a related field Experience teachingl English Language Arts, preferably grades 6-8 Minimum of two years of teaching experience preferred Current Georgia teaching certification in English Language Arts or Middle Grades Education preferred Current experience teaching in an accredited Georgia public, charter, or independent school preferred Experience with project-based learning, interdisciplinary instruction, culturally responsive teaching, literacy intervention, inquiry-based learning, or authentic writing experiences is highly valued More Than a Summer Job Odyssey is intentionally different. Our teachers have the opportunity to step outside some of the constraints of the traditional school year and teach creatively, collaborate across disciplines, experiment thoughtfully, and help young people discover the power of their own ideas and voices. Each summer, Odyssey scholars build academic skills, relationships, confidence, resilience, and a stronger sense of their own possibility. If you are an ELA educator who wants to spend part of your summer helping middle school scholars read more critically, write more purposefully, think more deeply, and use their voices with confidence, we are looking forward to meeting you. A quest for knowledge. A path through college—and beyond. Join us as a Summer Enrichment Teacher to ignite curiosity, foster academic excellence, and inspire the next generation of thinkers!
