Job Description
Part-time English Teacher Position for Saturday Morning Classes Merion Mercy Academy is seeking a part-time English teacher for the Saint Katharine Drexel Saturday Academy. This program is an academic enrichment program held at Merion Mercy for sixth, seventh and eighth grade girls on Saturday mornings. The program is designed for high-achieving middle school students and provides an academically rigorous experience that helps prepare students for a college preparatory high school. It is designed to provide accelerated work in the areas of math, English, and life/study skills along with an exposure to some parts of a high school curriculum. Students receive High School Placement Test preparation as well as guest talks from current Merion Mercy Academy faculty and students. Math and English classes are one hour each with a fifteen-minute free period between them. Life Skills class is a class taught in the third period. The school day always begins promptly at 8:45 a.m. and students are dismissed at 12:15 p.m. This is a part time, hourly position without benefits. The program runs from October through April. Reporting to the Director of External Relations, the English teacher: ? Creates a curriculum that encompasses critical reading and writing skills, grammar and vocabulary review and preparation for the language and reading sections on the High School Placement Test ? Collaborates with program leadership and, when appropriate, Merion Mercy administrators to support curriculum alignment and consistency ? Monitors student progress and communicates appropriately with program leadership, students, and families ? Establishes a culture of positive communication with students, colleagues and parents ? Communicates effectively with diverse populations ? Creates an inclusive classroom ? Demonstrates a willingness to respond to individual learning needs ? Practices a positive approach to classroom management ? Contributes to a welcoming program experience that helps students become familiar with the Merion Mercy community, its values and opportunities Qualifications include ? Minimum of two completed years of college as an English major ? Demonstrated knowledge of subject content ? Effective communicator both verbally and in writing ? Strong interest in teaching middle school students ? Experience teaching, tutoring, mentoring, or otherwise working with middle school students preferred.
