Students will learn how to responsibly use AI-based image recognition, sensor data analysis, and pattern-detection tools to flag potential problem areas in homes, understand the science behind these hazards, and communicate findings clearly and safely. This role blends environmental science, health awareness, and practical AI literacy. Key Responsibilities Design and teach a 10-week total for 5- weeks Fall and 5 weeks - Spring semester, part-time course (4 hrs/week) on Saturdays introducing students to AI-assisted environmental health assessment. Teach students to identify visual and environmental indicators of mold, mildew, moisture damage, asthma mapping, and poor air quality. Guide students in using AI tools (e.g., image recognition apps, air-quality sensor apps/devices, mapping, data-analysis platforms) to support — not replace careful human observation.
Teach the underlying science:
how mold and mildew develop, common causes of poor indoor and outdoor air quality, and asthma mapping associated health risks. Incorporate hands-on or simulated practice (e.g., analyzing sample photos/data, case studies, or supervised in-home/community walkthroughs if applicable). Teach students the limitations of AI tools in this context (false positives/negatives, the need for professional inspection and lab confirmation, not diagnosing or making health claims). Emphasize safety, privacy, and ethical practice — including obtaining proper permission before assessing any home, and clear boundaries around what students can and cannot conclude or advise homeowners. Assess student learning through projects, presentations, and practical assessments. Coordinate with school administration on any liability, safety, or parental consent requirements tied to fieldwork or home visits. Communicate clearly with parents/guardians and administrators about course content, safety protocols, and student progress. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in environmental science, Public Health, Biology, Education, or a related field. Experience teaching or mentoring students in the 9th-12th grade age range. 14 years old to 18 years Working knowledge of asthma mapping, indoor air quality, mold/mildew science, and basic environmental health principles. Familiarity with AI-based tools for image recognition or environmental data analysis (or strong willingness/aptitude to learn specific tools used in the course). Strong communication skills; ability to teach both technical and safety-related content in an age-appropriate way. Experience with AI literacy instruction or STEM curriculum development. Experience designing hands-on, project-based, or community-connected coursework. Desired Qualification and Skills Background in environmental health, industrial hygiene, building science, or public health inspection. Certification ot training related to mold/moisture asssessment (e.g. IAQA,ACAC, or similar ) --- not required to perform inspections, but useful for teaching accurately. Valid teaching certification/license-Preferred Qualifications or pending certification. Important Scope Note This course is educational in nature. Students are taught to recognize indicators and use AI tools as a learning exercise — this role and course do not certify students (or the instructor, unless independently credentialed) to perform official home inspections, remediation, or make legal/health determinations. Any real-world home assessments conducted as part of coursework should be framed as educational observation only, with clear guidance that professional inspection, testing, and remediation should be handled by licensed professionals.
Working Conditions Part-time role:
approximately 4 hours/week for Fall semester- 5 weeks and a 5-week Spring semester course. Includes both classroom instruction and course preparation time (see compensation note below).
