Job Summary The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan seeks applicants for a [full time/part time] new Lecturer III position with an anticipated start date of August 25, 2026. This is a non-tenure track position, with a University Year appointment period (i.e., runs August 25 through May 24 each year). A typical full-time (100% effort) load for a Lecturer III in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is three (3) courses per semester, or the equivalent in administrative and/or service duties. The initial appointment period will be four (4) years and the appointment may be renewed (based on programmatic need, funding, and performance). The appointment is subject to final approval by the college. Responsibilities• Duties and responsibilities for this Lecturer III position are expected to include:
Field Coordination:
Develop the structure to support field teaching across the curriculum, e.g. site-specific planning, equipment/instrumentation, safety materials, code of conduct, and content support for faculty. Be the go-to resource for faculty who want to expand their field offerings or use new instrumentation. Coordinate efforts to make field experiences accessible to inexperienced students: local trips, practice camping, gear familiarity, safety, orientations prior to field camp/field trips. Field teaching/safety orientation for Camp Davis GSls and other interested/relevant students (e.g. those doing independent field research). Provide planning and logistical support for instructional teams who lead domestic and international field trips. Plan and lead field classes and extracurricular field trips. Facilitate clear communications and guidance to undergraduate students regarding their field educational concerns and requirements. Classroom and field course teaching (credit bearing): The instructor will teach among the following courses:
EARTH 218/219
(Introduction to Environmental Science), EARTH 202 (Introduction to Field Environmental Science), EARTH 380 (Natural Resources, Economics, and the Environment), EARTH 436 (Field Studies in Stratigraphy, Paleontology, and Sedimentology), environmental mini-courses (EARTH 109, 112, and 115), and a new accessible field course. Other classes are possible depending on department needs and directions. Required Qualifications• Qualified candidates will have a Ph.D. in a related field prior to the start date of the position, a range of instructional expertise, and have extensive background in: Experience supporting students in developing the necessary skills for field work Experience coordinating and leading field classes and field trips for undergraduate students Excellence in classroom and field teaching of environmental sciences, sustainability, and resources to undergraduate students Ability to lead place-based field education programs near UM campus and at Camp Davis (Jackson, WY). Excellence in teaching and instructional service will be the principal criteria used to select the successful candidate.
