This is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced shelter medicine veterinarian and educator to help shape advanced veterinary training while providing leadership for postgraduate programs in shelter medicine. The Director will lead, develop, and oversee internships, residencies, specialty board preparation, and other advanced training initiatives while contributing to teaching, scholarship, and service within the College of Veterinary Medicine. The Opportunity The Director of Shelter Medicine Postgraduate Programs will provide leadership for the development and delivery of advanced clinical education in shelter medicine. The successful candidate will mentor interns, residents, and postgraduate trainees while working collaboratively with College leadership, faculty, community partners, shelters, humane organizations, and veterinary networks.
Key responsibilities include:
Develop and deliver advanced curriculum and clinical training for shelter medicine interns, residents, and postgraduate trainees. Provide direct instruction, mentorship, and supervision in shelter and community-based clinical environments. Prepare trainees for advanced clinical practice and specialty board certification. Develop and maintain instructional resources, case logs, assessments, evaluation tools, and other program materials. Oversee shelter medicine internship, residency, and postgraduate program operations. Ensure curriculum and program requirements align with specialty board standards and applicable professional competencies. Evaluate trainee progress, clinical competency, and readiness for specialty certification. Collaborate with Academic Affairs and Clinical Sciences leadership regarding institutional and accreditation requirements. Foster scholarly activity in shelter medicine, including clinical and applied research, program evaluation, presentations, and peer-reviewed publications. Mentor postgraduate trainees in research design, data collection, and manuscript preparation. Develop and strengthen partnerships with shelters, humane organizations, veterinary networks, and other community and professional partners. Participate in College and University service and contribute to the continued growth of LMU's veterinary medicine programs.
Required Qualifications Candidates must possess:
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or equivalent. Eligibility for veterinary licensure in the State of Florida. Specialty board certification in ABVP-Shelter Medicine or another specialty approved by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP) for advising residents. Documented clinical experience in shelter medicine. Experience teaching or mentoring veterinary students, interns, or residents. Preferred Qualifications Preference will be given to candidates with: An advanced degree such as an MS, MPH, PhD, or equivalent in a relevant field. Experience in program leadership or administration within an academic or clinical environment. Evidence of scholarly activity, including publications or presentations related to shelter medicine.
