Scope of Job:

The Department of Health and Biomedical Sciences (HaBS) seeks applicants for a full-time, non-tenure-track Lecturer I position with a three-year appointment beginning in the 2027-2028 academic year. The successful candidate will teach graduate health science courses in the Master of Science in Health Sciences (MSHS) program, including healthcare informatics (HI). Responsibilities include delivering high-quality instruction in an accelerated online format; developing and updating courses to reflect current professional standards and emerging practices; assessing student learning; mentoring and supporting graduate students; and contributing to curriculum development, program assessment, accreditation-related activities, and departmental and university service. The successful candidate will have the qualifications to teach other MSHS graduate-level health sciences courses as needed.

Department/College Background HaBS offers the interdisciplinary MSHS program designed for working professionals and delivered in an accelerated, fully online format. The program consists of five concentrations and serves students from varied healthcare and health-related backgrounds and emphasizes the application of evidence, technology, leadership, and interdisciplinary perspectives to contemporary healthcare challenges.

Minimum Qualifications:

An earned doctoral degree from a regionally accredited institution in one of the following fields is required by the start date of the position: health informatics, biomedical informatics, nursing informatics, or health information management. Candidates whose doctoral degree is in a related health science field must demonstrate a minimum of 18 graduate semester credit hours in informatics-specific coursework as part of that degree or through subsequent graduate coursework. Candidates must demonstrate academic or professional expertise sufficient to teach graduate-level health informatics courses and must have at least one year of teaching experience in health informatics or a closely related informatics discipline at an accredited college or university.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:

Demonstrated expertise in health informatics and the ability to teach graduate coursework in areas such as health information systems, electronic health records, data standards and governance, healthcare analytics, clinical decision support, privacy and security, systems implementation, or informatics project management. A current, nationally recognized professional certification relevant to healthcare informatics or the candidate's area of expertise. Examples include the AMIA Health Informatics Certification (AHIC/ACHIP); Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS); Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA); Certified Health Data Analyst (CHDA); Certified in Healthcare Privacy and Security (CHPS); ANCC Informatics Nurse (NI-BC); Project Management Professional (PMP); or a comparable credential.

Preferred Qualification:

A PhD in health informatics, biomedical informatics, health information management, health science with an informatics emphasis; experience teaching at the graduate level; and experience teaching in an accelerated online program. Additional preferences include professional experience applying informatics in a healthcare setting; experience developing or revising online courses; familiarity with program assessment, curriculum mapping, or accreditation processes; proficiency with learning management systems and instructional technologies; completion of the Quality Matters Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR) course; and excellent written and oral communication skills. Experience teaching diverse adult or graduate student populations is also preferred.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
