Education & Public Programming Position Overview Bloomsburie is seeking an Education Program Manager - National Coast Guard Museum to lead education and public programming at the National Coast Guard Museum in New London, Connecticut. The Education Program Manager will lead the planning, coordination, and delivery of curriculum-aligned STEM, history, maritime heritage, and public education programs. This position will manage education program operations, supervise and coordinate Education Program Assistants, support school and group engagement, and help ensure educational offerings are visitor-focused, mission-aligned, accessible, and integrated with museum operations. The Education Program Manager will serve as the primary education lead and contribute to high-quality learning experiences for students, educators, families, veterans, military audiences, and the general public. Key Responsibilities Plan, coordinate, and oversee education and public programming that supports the museum's mission as the national showcase for U.S. Coast Guard history and missions. Develop, adapt, and support the delivery of curriculum-aligned STEM, history, maritime heritage, civic education, and Coast Guard mission-related learning experiences. Coordinate school visits, guided learning activities, workshops, outreach events, demonstrations, and special public programs. Supervise, train, schedule, and provide direction to Education Program Assistants and other assigned education support personnel. Coordinate group visit logistics, educator communications, program reservations, arrival planning, accessibility accommodations, and preparation of program materials. Collaborate with the Program Manager, Visitor Services personnel, Event Coordinators, technical staff, and security representatives to ensure programs are appropriately staffed, safely executed, and integrated with museum operations. Maintain program quality through lesson preparation, staff briefings, visitor feedback, educator input, attendance tracking, and continuous improvement. Ensure educational programs are professional, age-appropriate, accurate, inclusive, and responsive to varied audiences. Coordinate with technical and AV support staff when programs require digital media, interactive exhibits, presentation systems, microphones, projection, or other technology. Support special events and surge periods by coordinating education programming and group activities with overall visitor flow and staffing plans. Maintain awareness of safety procedures, emergency protocols, visitor conduct expectations, and reporting requirements applicable to school groups and public programs. Prepare program schedules, staffing inputs, materials lists, participation data, incident notes, and after-action observations as required. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in education, museum studies, history, public history, maritime studies, STEM education, interpretation, nonprofit management, or a related field. Minimum of four (4) to six (6) years of progressive experience in museum education, curriculum development, or education program administration. Proven ability to interact professionally with school administrators, community groups, and military liaisons. Success in coordinating field trips and educational programs with regional school districts, homeschool networks, and community groups. Deep knowledge of curriculum frameworks, such as Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and the ability to translate them into hands-on museum lessons. Experience supervising and mentoring instructional staff, tracking schedules, and managing educational supplies. Experience executing mobile or off-site education initiatives targeting diverse or remote school groups. Schedule flexibility to oversee educational programs during weekends, school breaks, and special evening events. Experience managing or coordinating education programs, museum education, public programming, school group learning, interpretive programming, STEM education, history education, maritime education, or similar learning programs. Ability to design, adapt, and support curriculum-aligned educational content for students and public audiences. Strong organizational skills and ability to coordinate schedules, staff assignments, program materials, group logistics, and multiple priorities in a public museum environment. Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to engage educators, students, families, program staff, and museum stakeholders professionally. Ability to supervise, train, mentor, and provide day-to-day direction to education support staff. Ability to collaborate effectively with visitor services, event coordination, technical support, security, and program management personnel. Ability to follow museum operating procedures, safety guidance, visitor services standards, accessibility expectations, and supervisor direction. Basic proficiency with office productivity tools, schedules, program documents, attendance tracking, email, and presentation or learning-support technology. Successful completion of required orientation, education program training, safety training, visitor services training, and museum-specific operating procedures. Ability to successfully complete a Tier 1 / National Agency Check with Inquiries background investigation for a Public Trust position prior to receiving required credentials or facility access. Preferred Qualifications Prior experience in a museum, historic site, federal visitor center, maritime attraction, military heritage site, science center, cultural institution, or high-volume public education setting. Experience developing standards-based lesson plans, educator resources, interpretive activities, workshops, tours, demonstrations, or hands-on learning programs. Familiarity with U.S. Coast Guard history, maritime history, military missions, public service, STEM concepts, or civic education. Experience supporting accessibility accommodations, multilingual audiences, diverse learning needs, school safety requirements, or youth protection procedures. Training or experience in first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, de-escalation, crowd management, or incident reporting. The Education Program Manager is expected to support core museum operating hours of 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and may be required to work weekends, holidays, special events, school group days, workshops, ceremonies, ship commissionings, and other peak periods associated with the museum's 363-day-per-year operation. The position may require standing, walking, speaking to groups, moving throughout galleries and learning spaces, coordinating staff and materials, and adapting to changing schedules, visitor volumes, and program requirements.
