Interscholastic Athletics Location Largo, MD, US Organization Name Interscholastic Athletics Department Description Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Associate Superintendent, the Director of Interscholastic Athletics is responsible for the administration of the department, as well as providing leadership for the designing, planning, development, implementation and monitoring of system-wide athletics programs.? The incumbent oversees all departmental operations, ensuring quality and accountability across the department's primary areas of responsibility. These responsibilities include establishing and maintaining comprehensive interscholastic athletic programs for students; ensuring schools have qualified athletic directors and coaches; providing professional development on all aspects of interscholastic athletics; and overseeing the acquisition, allocation, and distribution of resources to support system-wide interscholastic athletics and student priorities.? The Director will serve as the liaison to the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA), Prince George's County Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association, the National Athletic Administrators Association, and the National Federation of State High School Associations. Detailed Description Duties and Responsibilities:
Provides leadership in planning, implementing and evaluating the entire interscholastic athletic programs for PGCPS; Oversees and evaluates personnel and services related to the interscholastic athletics program, including monitoring of school-based operations and productivity relative to identied systemic priorities and long-range goals and strategic planning; Monitors all phases and facets of the interscholastic athletics program delivery, serving as system spokesperson to articulate policies, procedures, and processes; monitors and provides oversight to staff; Represents PGCPS or delegates responsibility on MPSSAA standing and sport committees; Develops departmental professional development opportunities to ensure that the supervisor, principals, and school-based athletic directors and coaches develop the knowledge and competencies requisite for maintaining effective program operations, including assurance that systemic priorities are both addressed and satisfactorily operationalized; Plans, conducts, and/or participates in a variety of task force and policy-making committees at the local, state, and national level; Serves as the liaison for the procurement, oversight, and administration of contracts with certified sport referee and officials associations, ensuring compliance of officials to be eligible to administer contests; Collaborates with school-based and central office administrators to identify and resolve personnel or facility issues that impact the program or safety of students; Serves as liaison and outreach coordinator for parent and community groups relative to operations of the department, including Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA), school booster clubs, and community group presentations; Appoints Prince George's County Public Schools personnel to the MPSSAA Board of Control, standing committees and sports committees; Serves as the spokesperson/liaison regarding interscholastic athletics for newspaper, radio, television and other media outlets as needed; Serves as the liaison to the Office of Capital Programs, Office of the General Counsel, Office of Risk Management, Office of Communications, etc., regarding interscholastic athletics; Develops and manages the department's budget; monitors expenditures with regard to program maintenance, development and program improvements; Oversees the writing and dissemination of communication documents and maintains a healthy branding process for all programs; Collects and utilizes data to inform decisions and monitors plans for interventions; coordinates proven, research-based methods and strategies for reform; and Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements Qualifications:
Thorough knowledge of public school laws in Maryland and bylaws of the State Board of Education and the policies of the Board of Education of Prince Georges County; Thorough knowledge of the interscholastic athletic programs of the State of Maryland and Prince George's County; Thorough knowledge of the federal, state, and PGCPS policies, procedures, rules, and regulations related to athletics; Knowledge of current research, trends and federal, state and local laws and regulations governing athletics; Ability to use computer technology in an administrative and educational setting; Ability to work well with diverse groups of people including but not limited to central office personnel, principals, teachers, parents, coaches, and students; Excellent organizational ability and good human relation skills; Excellent communication skills as well a problem solving and consensus building expertise; and Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a complex school system, and support athletic programming. Education and/or
Experience Requirements:
Masters degree from an accredited college or university in curriculum and instruction, administration, or a closely related field required; Doctorate degree preferred. A minimum of ve (5) years of instructional experience and three (3) years of administrative and/or supervisory experience required, including some knowledge of interscholastic athletics policies and procedures; previous experience as a Principal preferred.
Certification:
Holds or is eligible for a valid professional license in Administrator I (historical) or Supervisor of Instruction, Assistant Principal, or Principal issued by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA) or Certified Master Athletic Administrator (CMAA) preferred.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Oversees and provides guidance and direction to the unit staff.
