Position Summary The Principal provides visionary and operational leadership for both the Kalamazoo Innovative Learning Program (KILP), a high school alternative education setting, and KPS Virtual, a fully online program serving grades 6-12. This role is responsible for ensuring high levels of academic achievement, student engagement, and social-emotional growth through innovative, flexible, and student-centered learning models. The Principal leads the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of systems that support student success in both in-person/hybrid alternative and virtual environments. This includes oversight of enrollment, student onboarding, engagement and attendance monitoring, instructional quality, compliance, staffing, budgeting, and community relations. This position requires a highly organized, solutions-oriented leader who thrives in complex systems, builds strong relationships, and effectively collaborates across departments, schools, and the broader community. Scope of Responsibilities Provides comprehensive leadership, supervision, and program development for both KILP and KPS Virtual. Establishes and communicates the vision, goals, and expectations for instructional excellence, student engagement, and social-emotional growth. Leads enrollment, onboarding, and retention initiatives for students in both programs. Ensures compliance with pupil accounting, attendance reporting, and state requirements specific to virtual and alternative education. Oversees instructional quality, including synchronous and asynchronous learning, and implements systems for professional development and staff coaching. Leads recruitment, selection, and orientation of all program staff, ensuring alignment with district standards and program vision. Collaborates with district departments, home schools, and community partners to ensure equitable access, coordinated supports, and smooth student transitions. Advocates for students and families by removing barriers to learning and ensuring access to personalized pathways for success. Manages program budgets, expenditures, staffing, and course offerings aligned with student needs and enrollment trends. Performance Responsibilities Provides full operational leadership for KILP and KPS Virtual, including supervision and evaluation of all personnel. Develops and implements systems to monitor student engagement, attendance, and academic progress, including targeted re-engagement strategies. Ensures accurate and audit-ready documentation for pupil accounting, attendance, and student records. Coordinates state and local assessment administration across virtual and in-person settings. Leads the implementation of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and intervention strategies. Provides instructional leadership through observation, coaching, and feedback for both in-person and virtual instruction. Oversees communication systems to ensure timely, proactive outreach to students, families, and community stakeholders. Collaborates with district leadership to align programs with district priorities and standards. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Secondary Education. Minimum Qualifications Master's degree in Educational Leadership or a related field. Valid Michigan school administrator certification (or ability to obtain). Minimum of three (3) years of successful building-level administrative experience. Demonstrated experience with instructional technology and online learning platforms. Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills. Proven ability to support diverse learners and foster inclusive learning environments. Preferred Qualifications Experience leading virtual, online, or blended learning programs. Experience in alternative education settings. Knowledge of pupil accounting, attendance, and compliance requirements for online programs. Experience with Learning Management Systems (e.g., Canvas, Edmentum). Demonstrated success in improving student engagement and re-engagement. Experience collaborating across departments within a school district.
