Job Description

The Deputy Provost provides leadership for divisional strategic planning, operational management, academic business processes, policy oversight, institutional reporting, and coordination of initiatives associated with the University's Academic Strategic Plan. Acting with delegated authority on behalf of the Provost, the Deputy Provost works closely with Associate Vice Chancellors, Deans, department chairs, directors, and university leadership to ensure effective implementation of divisional priorities, operational initiatives, and institutional objectives across Academic Affairs. The Deputy Provost serves as a primary liaison between Academic Affairs and the UNC System Office and is responsible for coordinating, reviewing, preparing, and communicating reports, operational updates, policy materials, and strategic initiatives associated with state, federal, and UNC System requirements. The position also supports institutional planning, operational assessment, accreditation activities, and policy implementation efforts within the division. The Deputy Provost supports divisional advancement efforts through the cultivation of strategic partnerships, external funding opportunities, grants, and sponsored initiatives that advance academic priorities, faculty support, research capacity, institutional operations, and strategic growth initiatives. The Deputy Provost plays a critical role in ensuring that the work of the Office of the Provost is coordinated, responsive, strategically aligned, and operationally effective. The position requires sound judgment, discretion, political acuity, and the ability to navigate a complex academic environment while managing multiple high-level initiatives and institutional priorities simultaneously. Minimum Training and Experience Requirements :
  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in higher education, educational leadership, business administration, public administration, or a related field required; earned doctorate preferred
  • Minimum of seven years of progressively responsible professional experience in higher education administration, academic affairs, institutional operations, or related leadership roles
  • Demonstrated experience supporting senior academic leadership, strategic initiatives, institutional operations, or divisional administration within a complex higher education environment
  • Proven ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and demonstrate discretion in decision making and management of sensitive institutional matters
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a complex organizational structure while managing multiple priorities, initiatives, and competing deadlines simultaneously
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, problem-solving, writing, and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare executive reports, strategic analyses, institutional communications, presentations, and operational updates for senior leadership and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically while supporting implementation and operational execution of institutional priorities and divisional initiatives
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with university administrators, faculty, staff, governmental agencies, and external partners
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to listen to differing perspectives, facilitate collaboration, and develop effective solutions that support the long-term interests of the University
  • Demonstrated knowledge of university policies, procedures, organizational operations, and shared governance processes within higher education
  • Demonstrated experience supporting operational planning, policy implementation, strategic initiatives, institutional reporting, or administrative coordination within Academic Affairs or a comparable division
  • Demonstrated resilience, initiative, self-motivation, adaptability, and capacity to operate effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic academic environment
  • Demonstrated ability to create and maintain collegial, collaborative, and professional working relationships across the institution
  • Experience supporting institutional planning, compliance activities, accreditation efforts, or strategic reporting initiatives preferred
  • Experience working with state systems of higher education, governing boards, or system office reporting processes preferred.
Management Preferences :
Proficiency in and proponent of data-based decision-making is preferred. Experience in data collection, data-sharing, reporting, and progress reports is preferred. The ability to use data and data analytic tools to guide institutional and program effectiveness and monitor progress relative to specific annual and long-term goals is preferred. The ability to effectively communicate results of institutional assessment to constituencies and provide recommendations to achieve and exceed strategic goals is preferred. Track record of successfully integrating strategic activities across the division, institution, and community around a shared vision for success Successful experience in university advancement and fundraising Experience in developing external partnerships that further develop a higher education institution and the surrounding region Experience in working with Admissions, Financial Aid, and the Office of the Registrar Experience in working with a Graduate School Experience with international academic programs Experience with institutional reporting and effectiveness initiatives Experience with policy development, revision, and implementation that supports the mission and priorities of the institution Experience coordinating the research infrastructure of the University to support the high impact educational experience of students and the enrichment and development of faculty Understands the key social, political, economic, and technological changes affecting higher education and brings creativity and vision to ensure that the University of North Carolina at Pembroke sustains/furthers its academic reputation and national leadership in the higher education community as well as with respect to social mobility Regular, non-disruptive, and reliable attendance is required, as well as the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious, and professional working relationships with others.
