Job Description

The Dean of Students for grades 9-12 is responsible for supporting a positive, safe, and structured school environment by overseeing student behavior, attendance, and student support systems. This role works collaboratively with administration, staff, students, and families to promote student success, address behavioral concerns, and foster a culture of accountability and respect. The Dean serves as a key leader in student services and school climate initiatives. Responsibilities Student Behavior & Discipline Manage student discipline in alignment with district policies and the student code of conduct Investigate and respond to behavioral incidents, ensuring fair and consistent outcomes Implement restorative practices and interventions to support student growth Maintain accurate discipline records and documentation Attendance & Student Accountability Monitor student attendance and address truancy concerns Collaborate with families, counselors, and outside agencies to improve attendance Develop and implement attendance intervention plans School Climate & Culture Promote a positive school climate focused on respect, responsibility, and inclusion Lead or support school-wide behavior expectations and PBIS or similar frameworks Build relationships with students to proactively address concerns and support engagement Student Support & Interventions Collaborate with counselors, administrators, and intervention teams to support at-risk students Participate in
MTSS/RTI
processes and student support meetings Assist in developing behavior intervention plans and re-entry plans following suspensions Supervision & Operations Provide supervision in common areas such as hallways, cafeteria, and school events Assist with arrival, dismissal, and general student flow throughout the day Support school safety procedures and emergency response protocols Family & Community Communication Communicate with parents/guardians regarding behavior, attendance, and student concerns Facilitate meetings with families to address student needs and develop support plans Connect families with school and community resources when appropriate Compliance & Reporting Ensure adherence to district, state, and federal regulations related to student discipline and attendance Maintain accurate records for reporting and audit purposes
Qualifications:
Required:
Bachelor's degree in Education or related field Valid state licensure (teaching license required; administrative license may be required depending on district) Minimum of 3 years of experience working with secondary students Strong understanding of student behavior management and discipline practices Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills
Preferred:
Master's degree in Educational Leadership, Counseling, or related field Administrative licensure/certification Experience in school discipline, PBIS, or restorative practices Experience working with at-risk or diverse student populations Training in conflict resolution, de-escalation, or crisis intervention
Physical Demands:
Ability to stand, walk, and actively supervise students throughout the school day Ability to move quickly in response to student situations or emergencies Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds Ability to physically intervene when necessary in accordance with district policy and training
Working Conditions:
