Area Coordinators (ACs) at Pacific University are integral to the development of vibrant, supportive and inclusive residential environments. Within the residence halls, ACs apply student development principles and best practices in student affairs to foster belonging and a positive living-learning experience for students. Area Coordinators actively engage with residents: providing guidance, and contributing to a sense of community. ACs also participate in Pacific University Student Affairs divisional initiatives, collaborating with colleagues to support university-wide goals. Area Coordinators are generally appointed for a three-year period, with an opportunity for an extension at the discretion of the Associate Director for Campus Living. The Area Coordinator's (AC's) position is a 12-month live-on position. Pacific University provides room and utilities.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Student Development and Support:
Foster a welcoming and inclusive community within the residence halls that promotes personal and academic growth Provide guidance, mentorship, and support to resident assistants (RAs) to ensure they excel in their roles as student leaders Build meaningful relationships with residents through regular check-ins, offering mentorship, support and guidanceCommunity Development:
Actively develop community through routine presence in the residence halls and intentionally connecting with each resident Collaboratively design engaging programs and initiatives that promote community engagement, cultural competence, and social responsibility Model community engagement through attendance at RA and resident events, performances, and competitions across campus, often outside of traditional work hours Build a culture of inclusivity where every student belongs in the residence halls Encourage and maintain a sense of pride and identity within each residence hall Address and resolve community concerns as needed, while prioritizing restoring positive relationshipsCrisis Management and Student Well-being:
Serve as a first-responder during emergency situations, including on-call responsibilities Collaborate with campus partners to address students' physical and emotional well-being, referring them to appropriate resources when necessary Implement and enforce university policies and procedures related to residence hall livingAdministrative Duties:
Oversee the day to day operations of the residence halls, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment, including maintenance requests, and physical space assessments Oversee the budget for residence hall programming and maintenance, ensuring responsible fiscal management Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student conduct and incidents within the residence halls Participate in all Campus Living departmental processes as needed (examples include: RA Training and Selection, Room Selection, etc)Professional Development and Collaboration:
Stay current on best practices, trends, and research in student affairs and residence life Collaborate with campus partners, including student support, academic advisors, counseling services, facilities and campus safety, to provide holistic support to students Participate in departmental and university-wide committees and initiativesSECONDARY FUNCTIONS
Serves as a member of the Student Affairs On-Call Team, participating in the regular rotation schedule to support student needs and respond to campus incidents after hours. Other duties as assigned.JOB SCOPE
Performs position duties under direct supervision of Associate Director of Campus Living, operating from established practices. Decisions are made within general University policy guidelines, and may require some autonomous decision-making. Decisions of significant consequence are made in consultation with their supervisor.SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITY
Supervises Support-Level Staff:
This position supervises residential student-staff members in assigned residence halls, as well as other student-staff or graduate student-staff as assigned. Responsibility includes employee selection, training, development, mentoring and/or corrective action, managing leave requests and other student-staff related concerns or needs.REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institutionREQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Excellent customer service and successful written and verbal communication with a broad and diverse audience in a culturally responsive manner. Ability to maintain confidential, detailed records. Proficient in the use of common office software, spreadsheets, email, databases, and electronic platforms. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with people in a wide range of roles. Demonstrates critical thinking skills in problem solving and decision-making. Ability to build and sustain rich collaborative relationships with university staff, students, and university partners of diverse backgrounds. Ability to prioritize and perform multiple projects, track data, meet timelines, respond to others in a timely manner, and work both independently and as a collaborative member of the University with a high standard of integrity and ethics, in support of the University's strategic vision and the division's annual goals. Able to make independent decisions and recommendations that align with policies, rules, and procedures; ability to ask questions and seek assistance when needed. Able to handle a variety of tasks in a fast-paced environment, working independently and/or as part of a team.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree in higher education administration or closely related field 3-5 years of experience in residence life or student affairs, with a strong understanding of student development theory Experience supervising student employees Familiarity with Google suite, eRezlife, and Colleague Demonstrated understanding of issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education Experience coordinating or supporting student programs, events, or initiatives Strong written and verbal communication skills Bilingual or multilingual skills Experience managing budgets or overseeing operational processes Training or certification in conflict resolution, mental health first aid, and/or project management Knowledge of FERPA, Title IX, or other relevant higher education compliance standards Ability to develop and assess learning outcomes or program goals Familiarity with institutional research, assessment practices, or data-informed decision-makingWORKING CONDITIONS
Most work occurs in either a residence hall or an office environment. Required to work two evenings a week on average, as well as some weekends and holidays. Serves in on-call rotation with other professional staff members from several areas, including consulting and/or responding after hours and on weekends to critical campus situations. Immediate follow-up, student support and facilities management is required in situations during work hours. Some amount of stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting, walking, climbing stairs, carrying and other movements may be required. Working at a computer keyboard involving extensive wrist and hand movements. All individuals are required to be able to perform these movements without a significant risk of injury to themselves or others, or to otherwise demonstrate how they can perform the essential functions listed above. All Campus Living employees are required to submit background checks. The Area Coordinator is required to live in one of the University's residence halls in an apartment assigned by the University. A significant other/partner/spouse and/or any child dependents may reside with the employee while the primary employee is current, pending a satisfactory background check on each individual.Work Setting:
