Dean of Students
Job Description
SCOPE:
The Dean of Students is responsible for promoting a positive, safe, and supportive school climate by supporting student discipline, behavior interventions, and students support services as directed by the Head of School. The Dean works collaboratively with school leadership, teachers, counselors, families, and community agencies to ensure student success while maintaining compliance with school policies, state regulations, and applicable laws. The Dean of Students serves as a member of the school building leadership team and is responsible for fostering a culture of respect, accountability, equity, and academic excellence.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
▪ Supervise bus services, including outside duty in the morning and afternoon, as well as disciplinary and safety issues with buses. Be the school contact for all busing related issues and concerns.
▪ Monitor the cafeteria at lunch times and recesses to help promote positive behavior.
▪ Assist with student discipline issues as directed by the Head of School.
▪ Assist the Head of School in monitoring all suspensions of students both in and out of school.
▪ Assist the Head of School in tracking disciplinary cases at the school.
▪ Participate on various committees and teams as directed by the Head of School, including Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, Multi-Tiered System of Supports and others.
▪ Interact with and support staff in promoting positive culture that aligns with to the IB's mission and philosophy.
▪ Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by their supervisor.
STUDENT DISCIPLINE AND BEHAVIOR
▪ Implement and enforce the Student Code of Conduct and school policies.
▪ Investigate student disciplinary incidents and determine appropriate interventions and consequences.
▪ Conduct student conferences and use restorative practices as appropriate.
▪ Maintain accurate disciplinary documentation and student records.
▪ Monitor discipline trends and develop strategies to reduce behavioral incidents.
▪ Coordinate behavior intervention plans with teachers, counselors, and administrators.
▪ Ensure disciplinary procedures comply with applicable federal, state, and local laws.
SCHOOL CLIMATE AND CULTURE
▪ Promote a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment
▪ Develop and implement positive behavior support initiatives.
▪ Support school-wide student recognition programs.
▪ Support conflict resolution among students.
▪ Assist with crisis response and student safety procedures.
STUDENT SUPPORT
▪ Collaborate with school counselors, social workers, special education staff, and administrators regarding student needs.
▪ Participate in Student Assistance Program (SAP), MTSS, PBIS, or similar intervention meetings.
▪ Support students experiencing academic, behavioral, or social-emotional challenges, including providing and/or arranging for tiered interventions.
▪ Maintain confidentiality of student information.
PARENT AND COMMUNITY RELATIONS
▪ Meet with parents regarding student discipline and behavioral concerns.
▪ Maintain positive relationships with families through timely and professional communication.
▪ Coordinate with outside agencies, law enforcement, and community organizations when appropriate.
STAFF COLLABORATION
▪ Support teachers with classroom management strategies.
▪ Provide coaching regarding student behavior interventions.
▪ Collaborate with principals and instructional leadership on school improvement initiatives.
▪ Participate in faculty meetings, building leadership meetings, and professional development.
SAFETY AND OPERATIONS
▪ Assist with supervision during arrival, dismissal, lunch, recess, and school events.
▪ Assist with emergency preparedness, drills, and crisis management.
▪ Ensure student safety throughout the school day.
DATA AND REPORTING
▪ Maintain accurate records of student discipline and attendance.
▪ Prepare reports for school leadership and the Board as requested.
▪ Analyze behavioral and attendance data to support continuous improvement.
QUALIFICATIONS
▪ Bachelor's degree required.
▪ Master's degree in Educational Leadership, School Administration, Counseling, or related field preferred
CERTIFICATION
▪ Pennsylvania Principal Certification or eligibility preferred.
▪ Other appropriate educational certifications considered.
EXPERIENCE
▪ Minimum of three years of successful experience in education.
▪ Experience with student discipline, behavior management, and school leadership preferred.
▪ Experience working with diverse student populations.

NOTE:
All abilities above must be at a professional level, as expected from the required educational level of the job.
Specific Skills:
▪ Strong public speaker to represent the school and Chief Academic Officer at functions
▪ Empathy to deal with students and families with their concerns, issues, and questions
▪ Curricular knowledge of the state standards and the IB framework to lead teachers
▪ Organizational Acumen for planning curriculum and activities for the current year and beyond
▪ Data analysis skills to disaggregate PSSA's and other assessments according to groups and sub-groups in YARCS as related to Pennsylvania and national standards
Note:
This position will require a time split of approximately 50% from the office administrative duties and 50% curricular-based work with teachers and students
