THE UNIVERSITY OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA DAVID A. CLARKE SCHOOL OF LAW

(UDC LAW) invites applications for a

FULL-TIME

Visiting Legal Writing Instructor for the 2026-27 academic year. The successful candidate will work with the Director of Legal Writing and three other full-time instructors to implement, revise, and enhance the legal writing curriculum.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Develop and teach either two sections of the required first-year Lawyering Process course (14 18 students per section) or one section of the first-year course and one section of the required upper-level Appellate Advocacy course. Opportunities to teach an upper-level writing seminar may be available depending on curricular needs. Incorporate pedagogical techniques, including flipped classrooms, peer review, and digital tools. Grade assignments with detailed, individualized feedback and regularly hold student conferences. Assist in teaching workshops in the Writing Hub, an interactive writing center open to all students. Collaborate with colleagues to revise and enhance the legal writing curriculum. Mentor students on writing-intensive projects like law review notes, moot court briefs, and moot court competitions. Provide academic advising and career guidance, especially for students interested in litigation or judicial clerkships. Serve on faculty committees and contribute to the intellectual and community life of the law school.

Minimum Job Requirements:

An earned Juris Doctor degree and a member in good standing of the Bar of the District of Columbia or another jurisdiction. Excellent legal writing and analytical skills. Experience in law practice or a judicial clerkship. Demonstrated teaching excellence and a record of scholarship. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
