Youth Services Librarian Salary $45,115.20 - $51,870.44 Annually Location Carver Branch Library, 4915 Lansing Drive, Winston-Salem, NC Job Type Full Time Job Number 08967 Department Library Opening Date 07/24/2026 Closing Date 8/3/2026 11:59 PM Eastern Description Benefits Questions General Statement of Duties Forsyth County Public Library has exciting opportunities for enthusiastic library professionals to plan and develop youth services programming while also serving the general public in a branch library. Youth Services Librarians are responsible for the provision of library services for all ages in the branch library to include circulation, reference, reader's advisory and overall customer service. This position plans, publicizes, prepares and performs weekly story times for preschool children and regular programs for youth from birth to teen including music and movement, summer reading and monthly teen programs. Collection Development responsibilities include serving on the JSWAT team to select materials for youth for all library locations and weeding and collection maintenance at the branch library. Other duties include conducting tours, preparing PR materials and merchandising the collection. This position will assist customers with public computers, online assistance, downloading materials and general computer questions. Distinguishing Features Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of library science. Ability to become familiar with automated library systems. Considerable knowledge of current classification and cataloging practices. Ability to promote interest in library services and plan and carry out library programming. Ability to select materials appropriate to particular library collections. Ability to express ideas effectively orally and in writing. Ability to ascertain user interest levels, and considerable familiarity with books and other materials. Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public and maintain effective working relationships with other employees. Considerable knowledge of reference sources and methods including the ability to access information using current technologies. Considerable knowledge of the current literature, trends, and developments in the field of library science appropriate to the areas of assignment. Considerable knowledge of the policies and procedures of the county library system. Lifting up to 20 lbs. occasionally 10 lbs. frequently or negligible amounts constantly, requires walking or standing to a significant degree. Minimum Education and Experience Master of Library Science (MLIS) degree from an ALA accredited library school. Must obtain certification of the North Carolina Public Librarian Certification Commission. Must have a valid drivers license. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Conducts online searches on various bibliographic databases as needed. Evaluates and develops the material collection in their assigned section in accordance with library materials selection policies. Maintains various files containing information on subjects that may not be available in standard sources. Provides appropriate library service for children and young adults to include working with schools to provide library services to compliment school work. Performs related work as required. Answers reference/research/directional questions by the use of traditional print resources, CD ROM resources, Internet resources and online catalogs of other libraries. Provides readers advisory services using personal knowledge, reader's advisory print resources and electronic databases. Promotes positive public relations for the library through preparation and installation of exhibits, coordination and implementation of special programs.
