Position Summary The Medical Informatics Librarian advances the educational, research, and scholarly communication mission of the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM) through innovative library services, information literacy instruction, research support, and academic engagement. The position collaborates with faculty, staff, students, residents, and library colleagues; contributes to the continuous improvement of SOM Library services and resources; and provides library, instructional, and research services for the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Master of Biomedical Sciences, Master of Public Health, and Graduate Medical Education programs. The Medical Informatics Librarian reports to the Director of the SOM Library. Position primarily works out of the School of Osteopathic Medicine located at Brooks City Base Campus located at 7615 Kennedy Hill Drive, San Antonio, TX 78235. Job Duties Job Duty Name Instruction and Academic Engagement Description of Job Duties Serves as the primary library liaison to the School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM). Develops and delivers scaffolded, learning outcomes aligned information literacy instruction and educational materials in collaboration with SOM faculty as part of the UIW Libraries' co-curricular instruction program. Provides customized, course-integrated library instruction sessions that support curricular goals and student learning. Collects, analyzes, and reports instructional and outreach assessment data to support continuous improvement efforts and develops assessment metrics appropriate for the health sciences. Develops and delivers library orientations, workshops, seminars, and other educational programs. Collaborates with health professions librarians to support interprofessional education initiatives and learning opportunities. Creates and maintains subject guides, course guides (e.g., LibGuides), and other instructional resources to support effective use of library resources and services. Authors and maintains the SOM Research Blog to promote awareness of research resources, scholarly communication, and research-related topics relevant to the SOM community. Monitors developments and innovations in information literacy, instructional design, educational technology, and learning assessment. Job Duty Name Research and Reference Services Description of Job Duties Provides reference and research consultation services to SOM students, faculty, staff, and residents, both individually and in group settings. Conducts comprehensive literature searches and other advanced research support services for SOM faculty and staff. Collaborates with UIW librarians to support initiatives related to open access, open educational resources (OER), research data management, AI literacy, scholarly publishing, and digital accessibility. Remains current with emerging trends and best practices in medical and health sciences librarianship through ongoing professional development, including conferences, workshops, webinars, and other continuing education activities. Job Duty Name Collection Development and Management Description of Job Duties Participates in collection development and management activities for the SOM Library and collaborates with UIW health professions librarians to build and maintain collections that support the SOM curriculum, research, and clinical programs. Assists in evaluating, selecting, and managing print and electronic resources to meet the information needs of SOM students, faculty, staff, and residents. Updates collection development and resource access policies under the guidance of the SOM Library Director. Collaborates with UIW health professions librarians and the Systems and Licensing Coordinator to identify collection priorities and coordinate shared resource acquisitions across the health sciences disciplines. Job Duty Name Marketing, Outreach, and Engagement Description of Job Duties Promotes SOM Library resources, services, programs, and co-curricular initiatives to support student success, teaching, learning, and research under the direction of the Director. Builds and maintains collaborative relationships with students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders to enhance awareness and engagement with library resources and services. Plans and implements marketing and promotional initiatives that communicate the value and impact of SOM Library programs, resources, and services. Participates in library-wide marketing, outreach, and communication campaigns to strengthen the visibility and engagement of the SOM Library within the university community. Job Duty Name Professional and Institutional Service Description of Job Duties Actively participates in and demonstrates leadership through service to the UIW Libraries, the University, professional organizations, and the broader community. Serves on committees, task forces, and strategic initiatives within the UIW Libraries, the School of Osteopathic Medicine, the University, and relevant professional organizations. Represents the SOM Library and UIW Libraries through professional, institutional, and community engagement activities. Job Duty Name Accreditation and Special Projects Description of Job Duties Actively contributes to institutional and program accreditation activities, including preparation, documentation, data collection, reporting, and site visit support for accrediting bodies such as the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA). Participates in special projects and strategic initiatives as assigned by SOM Library and School of Osteopathic Medicine leadership. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Knowledge Skills and Abilities Demonstrated knowledge of health information literacy principles and emerging trends in AI health literacy. Proficiency in the use of instructional technologies, software applications, and educational support platforms. Strong project management and team leadership skills, with the ability to coordinate collaborative initiatives and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Advanced literature searching and information retrieval skills using health sciences databases, including PubMed and other evidence-based resources. Ability to design, develop, and maintain online instructional materials and learning objects, including tutorial videos, research guides, and online learning modules. Proficiency with technologies and applications used for course management, online collaboration, project management, and library operations (e.g., Canvas, OneDrive/SharePoint, Springshare products, and integrated library systems such as Alma). Excellent oral, written, instructional, and presentation communication skills. Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with students, faculty, staff, and external partners. Required Education Master's Degree from an ALA accredited library and/or Information Science Program (or foreign equivalent). Required Work Experience Two (2) years of professional librarian experience in a medical or health sciences library, or equivalent experience supporting medical or health sciences education including the design, delivery, and assessment of instructional programs for adult learners with an emphasis on evidence-based medicine. Preferred Qualifications Experience supporting systematic reviews, evidence synthesis projects, and scholarly publishing activities. Demonstrated experience collaborating with faculty to support curriculum development, instructional initiatives, and student learning. Experience working in a medical education, health sciences, or clinical care environment. Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP) certification. Knowledge of institutional repositories, scholarly communication, research data management, and related library workflows. Additional degree or substantial coursework in a health sciences-related field (e.g., MPH, Microbiology, Public Health, Sociology, or related discipline). Experience working independently and managing diverse responsibilities in a small library or branch campus setting. Interest in supporting healthcare practitioners, including clinical faculty, residents, fellows, and students engaged in clinical training.
