Job Description

Library Assistant I 18 hours per week $15.57 per hour Optional participation in the Flexible Benefits Plan of Georgia Three paid holidays a year Access to the Employee Assistance Program The Hall County Library System is seeking a part-time Library Assistant I to work at the Blackshear Place branch. This position assists with programs, assists in finding research and reading materials, helps to maintain order in the department or branch, and other duties as assigned. Reports to the branch manager. Must be eligible to accept passport applications (see eligibility requirements below).
Examples of Work:
  • Conducts reference interviews to assist in finding appropriate materials and information using electronic databases, Internet, as well as traditional print sources; provides readers advisory service.
  • Performs circulation activities including checking materials in and out, placing holds, collecting fines, and issuing library cards.
  • Helps plan, prepare, and execute programming.
  • Promotes patron interest through the creation of displays and bibliographies.
  • Assists in collection maintenance including shelving, maintaining shelf order, weeding, repairing materials, and dealing with damaged and missing items.
  • Participates in collection development including selecting new materials using established library procedures and professional resources, checking in new materials, and examining new materials for content and proper placement in the collection.
  • Works a minimum of one outreach event per year. Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Works as a passport acceptance agent within the branch.
Work Schedule:
  • Subject to evening and weekend assignments.
Staff Development Requirements:
  • Completes 10 hours of continuing education per year.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to understand and use complex electronic catalog, circulation, and patron record computer software as well as e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, and desktop publishing programs.
  • Ability to understand and use reference tools in print form and in online databases.
  • Basic clerical skills including understanding of alphabetical and numerical order and an understanding of and ability to use the Dewey Decimal Classification system.
  • Ability to execute age-appropriate programs.
  • Ability to communicate with the public in a positive manner, either individually or in an audience.
  • Ability to make decisions within stated guidelines and to work independently in a wide variety of situations.
  • Ability to become a passport acceptance agent. Employees are eligible to accept passport applications if they meet all of the following requirements and complete official training to obtain certification:
  • Be a United States citizen or non-citizen U.S. national.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Be a permanent employee of the designated facility (not temporary, ad hoc, contractual or volunteer.)
  • Be unable to access birth or identity document printing, amending, or issuance functions, including performing duties on different days or hours.
  • Not presently under parole or probation related to any Federal, State, or local convictions.
  • Not presently under indictment for a Federal, State, or local felony, or a misdemeanor related to breach of trust or moral turpitude.
  • Free of any Federal, State, or local felony convictions.
  • Free of any Federal, State, or local misdemeanor convictions related to breach of trust or moral turpitude (i.
e. embezzlement, document fraud, drug offense, or dishonesty carrying out a responsibility involving public trust.)
Pay:
$15.57 per hour Expected hours: 18.0 per week
