Job Description

Basic Function and Scope of Responsibilities The Circulation Desk Clerk deals directly with the public in the performance of library services and implementation of library policy. Provides excellent customer service. Assists patrons in locating, using, and checking out desired materials. Responsibilities Essential Functions Greet, assist and refer individuals according to their needs. (Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.) Non-Essential Functions Assist in training new clerks. Assist with programs, displays and special projects as required by Supervisor and/or Director. (Page 1 of 2) Education Requirements Associates Degree. Must obtain and renew appropriate library certification as required by the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives. Special Requirements Must have Ky. driver's license and have access to personal vehicle. Training, Skills, Knowledge and/or Experience Library experience preferred. Position requires active multi-tasking and attention to detail. Excellent customer service skills. Decision Making Must be able to analyze issues, exercise good judgment to solve problems, and make decisions. Refers complex problems to the circulation supervisor. Computer Skills Must demonstrate competency in computer use including Internet, e-mail, Microsoft Office Products (or equivalent) and library's automated system. Must demonstrate competency and ability to learn about emerging technology as trends demand. Must be able to operate, troubleshoot, and perform routine maintenance on library and office equipment. Physical Effort Must have the physical ability, stamina, mobility and manual dexterity to stand and use hands to perform tasks for the majority of the work day. Must be able to reach top shelves with step stand and bend to lower shelves. Must be able to perform light lifting, pushing or pulling of books on library carts. Hours Regular schedule with flexibility, including evenings and weekends as needed. Perform all aspects of circulation duties including phone and in person inquiries, empty book-drop, check materials in/out, shelve items, process holds and interlibrary loans, register new cardholders and collect fines/fees. Assist customers with the use of all library equipment, send faxes. Replenish copier paper and toner. Make recommendations to Technical Services department for collection development. Provide reference service. Verify accuracy of deliveries before signing. Keep reserve shelf current. Inspect returned items and materials for damage and/or missing parts. Carry out opening and closing routines. Assist in keeping the library neat and orderly, shelves items in correct order and straightens shelves. Maintain high level of confidentiality. Follow library policies and procedures in accordance with the library's mission statement. Must be approachable and cooperative in dealing with both staff and patrons. Perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor and/or Director.
