Job Description
Job Summary The Library Assistant supports the daily operations of the library by helping patrons access resources, organizing materials, and maintaining library systems. This role provides both customer service and administrative support to ensure the library remains organized, accessible, and welcoming to all visitors.
Minimum Qualifications Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required; Maryland resident Individuals eligible for the Maryland Service Year Program (generally ages 18-24)Experience:
Previous experience in a library, school, or customer service environment preferredLicensure/Certification:

Strong organizational and multitasking skills Good communication and customer service skills Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office, databases, email) Ability to work independently and as part of a team Attention to detail and accuracy in record keeping Basic knowledge of library systems or classification methods preferred Previous experience in a library, school, or customer service environment preferred Strong organizational and multitasking skills Good communication and customer service skills Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office, databases, email) Ability to work independently and as part of a team Attention to detail and accuracy in record keeping Basic knowledge of library systems or classification methods preferred What You'll Do Assist patrons in locating books, digital resources, and other materials Check materials in and out using the library system Shelve and organize books, magazines, and other materials Process new materials, including labeling and catalog preparation Maintain and update library records and databases Answer basic reference questions and refer complex inquiries to librarians Support library programs, events, and workshops Help maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment Monitor library spaces and ensure policies are followed Perform administrative tasks such as filing, data entry, and inventory tracking What the Job is Really Like Work is a mix of customer interaction and behind-the-scenes organization You'll frequently switch between helping patrons and completing tasks like shelving or data entry Some work can be repetitive (shelving, organizing) but requires strong attention to detail You may need to enforce policies (noise levels, computer use), which can occasionally be uncomfortable Busy periods may occur during programs, events, or peak library hours The role requires both independence and teamwork throughout the day Work Environment & Demands Library setting with frequent public interaction Regular standing, walking, and shelving of materials Occasional lifting and carrying of books or materials Use of computers and library systems throughout the day May include evening or weekend shifts depending on library hours What Success Looks Like Patrons receive helpful, friendly, and efficient service Library materials are accurately organized and easy to locate Records and systems are maintained with a high level of accuracy The library environment remains clean, safe, and welcoming You effectively balance customer service with operational tasks You contribute positively to the overall library experience for visitors Caring for Our Team We offer a comprehensive benefits package to support our employees' well-being and professional growth.
