Job Description
DEFINITION
The Library Public Services Technician provides support for all public service operations, including Circulation, Reference, and Interlibrary Loan. The position is also responsible for assisting patrons with general information services and performing routine clerical duties.SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
This position is located at the Downtown Campus Library and the individual would report to the Assistant Director of the Library.ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENTS
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Checks in/out library materials using an automated circulation system. Maintains Library patron database by generating, editing, or updating records. Advises patrons about Library services, policies and procedures. Enforces Library and College policies. Collects and documents payments for Library services, fines, and lost or damaged materials and equipment. Instructs patrons in the use of Library equipment and provides routine maintenance and troubleshooting for equipment, including copiers, computer workstations, print release, scanner, digital displays, change machine, etc. Assists patrons with routine technology questions related to Wi-Fi access, printing, Blackboard, Gmail, Google drive, Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, etc.), etc. Sorts and shelves books and other library materials accurately according to the Library of Congress Classification System (online and on-the-job training provided). This requires lifting and carrying library materials; pushing and pulling book carts; and frequent stooping and reaching. May require standing on a step stool or library ladder. Processes patron blocks in the Library's system and in Colleague. Performs other tasks to keep the collections in order: Label Library materials, Organize and maintain the Reserve collection; Maintain appearance of work and public areas; Clear tables of library materials; Empty book drop; Arrange or dismantle Library displays; Unpack and pack boxes of books and other library materials; Check shelves for correct arrangement of books; Read shelves for accuracy; Retrieve Library materials from shelves or from public and non-public areas for library staff or library users. Assists patrons with simple searches of the online catalog. Promotes use of the Library's collections and services. Assists, as needed, with Library tours. Monitors and troubleshoots library facilities and equipment and reports problems to the appropriate College unit (HelpDesk, Maintenance, Custodial, etc.). Helps with the Interlibrary Loan process, including helping patrons fill out a request, pulling requests, and other ILL tasks Opens and/or closes and secures the Library following established procedures. Answers the Library phone. Other Important Functions Performs general clerical tasks using standard software (such as Word, Excel, Access) to access or enter information. This requires the ability to sort and file alphabetically and numerically. Performs other duties as required. All Cape Fear Community College Library staff are expected to serve at public service desks as assigned; work evenings, if scheduled; and work at any campus or center duty station, or remotely, as assigned.QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Customer service principles and techniques Computer operations including: Microsoft Office suite, e-mail, online searching, downloading/printing/saving techniques Modern office procedures and methods Principles and procedures of record keeping Basic arithmetic English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation Ability to: Provide excellent customer service in a public service environment Learn, follow, and enforce library and College policies and procedures Handle a cash drawer, change machines, and a safe as prescribed by State auditors Operate computerized systems for library circulation, Print Management, e-mail and an online catalog (after training) Learn and recall library and computer terminology Understand the Library of Congress Classification System for organizing resources (after training) Learn basic types and uses of library materials and services Locate, retrieve, and shelve or store Library resources Understand and follow oral and written instructions Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for: Making observations Reading, writing and communicating complicated ideas and concepts to others Troubleshooting assigned equipment Reading spine labels accurately Maintain mental capacity, which allows the capability of: Making sound decisions Demonstrating intelligence and initiative Differentiating between directional and reference questions Effectively implementing library policies and procedures Communicating clearly and respectfully, both orally and in writing Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which include the following: Standing or sitting for extended periods of time Operating assigned equipment Handling varied tasks simultaneously Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with patrons (faculty, staff, students, colleagues, and the public).Working Conditions:

Associate degree required Preferred Education/Training Bachelor's Degree Library experience or coursework preferred Experience with an integrated, automated library system preferred Special Instructions toApplicants :
Position is based at the North Campus Library.Expected hours will be:
Monday to Wednesday 12 pm - 5 pm (or midday shift) Thursday & Friday 7:30 am - 12:30 pm (or morning shift) Hours may vary at times but will not exceed 25 hours per week Schedule varies during semester breaks and other times that classes are not in session and during the summer session.
