SUMMARY OF POSITION
Academic interventionists work extensively with students to help them improve specific reading comprehension and academic behaviors. The interventionist addresses the specific needs of a particular student or group of students when regular classroom instruction is not sufficient. Specialists work with the teacher to design methods of learning that are most appropriate for each student.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Valid teaching license required, English/Reading content preferred Working knowledge of educational standards, strategies and technology Classroom leadership and facilitation skills Ability to disaggregate, interpret, and analyze assessment data Communicate effectively with administrators, principals, teachers, and parents both orally and in writing
GOALS OF THE ACADEMIC INTERVENTIONIST
To ensure that student achievement data is used to drive decisions at the classroom and school level To help students develop proficient literacy skills that will contribute to their academic growth To provide a continuum of support and help the students meet grade level expectations To work collaboratively with teachers and support staff for the implementation interventions To expand teachers' use of a variety of resources to improve instruction
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Plan, teach, and evaluate instruction for students having difficulty with reading Implement appropriate student interventions, including the use of research based interventions Assist teachers and other administrators and/or supervisors in implementing the school reading program Collect, compile, and submit reports on pre/post achievement data for students participating remediation/intervention activities Work with the classroom teacher and district personnel to coordinate instruction designed to meet the individual needs of students Work with the classroom teachers to monitor student progress Help teachers identify reading strengths and weaknesses and match these skills with appropriate techniques and materials. Participate in ongoing data analysis, inquiry, and collaboration around intervention, coaching, and facilitation Meet regularly with the principal, assistant principal, instructional coach, teacher teams and school improvement chairs to determine school needs. Assist in strengthening family and school ties by facilitating opportunities for parents to increase their understanding and knowledge of reading skills and activities. Assist with the implementation and documentation of the Response to Intervention model. Follow other directives from the building administrator, Director of Teaching and Learning, and the Superintendent.
ABILITIES
Knowledge of and experience in curriculum development preferred Knowledge of and experience with a variety of language arts and reading instructional methods and materials and/or reading methods Awareness of varied ways in which students learn Effective organizational ability Effective diagnostic and remedial instruction abilities Effective working rapport, with classroom teachers and RTI aides Excellent communication skills with students and other professionals Understanding of evidence-based reading research and assessment of student progress toward achievement of benchmarks Demonstrate a desire to work cooperatively with other educators
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Demonstrate interpersonal skills necessary to deal tactfully and effectively with persons at all levels in order to develop and maintain productive relationships Ability to learn new skills quickly and assimilate into daily work Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality both inside and outside the corporation Ability to work independently and in a team environment Ability to multi-task with attention to detail Proficient operation of office equipment including computer and job-related software such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, sharing, and others Practical knowledge and use of multimedia authoring programs, learning management systems (Canvas), and emerging technologies Practical knowledge of differentiated instruction, reading strategies, instructional design theories, and learning style theories. Perform time management and scheduling functions, meet deadlines, and set project priorities. Perform all other duties as assigned by immediate supervisors and district administrators
