Learning Assistants are expected to attend an assigned section of a math class to assist students with activities, attend paid trainings, tutor students outside of class, attend weekly meetings with other SLCC Learning Assistants, and attend a weekly pedagogy class. Students may set their own schedule for tutoring students outside of class time. Expected weekly hours are 10-15.
- Attend classes with students to establish connection/bonding with the instructors and the students.
- Assist with classroom activities.
- Provie quality learning assistance to students enrolled in an assigned section of a math class.
- Assist instructors with one-on-one planning meetings to ensure that students are remaining engaged and absorbing material.
- Provide feedback to students using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage, motivate, and build confidence in students.
- Work with students in groups providing support and structure in project-based assignments and work with math manipulative classroom aides.
- Teach students study skills, note-taking techniques, and test-taking strategies as needed.
- Participate in training, development opportunities, and other events when available.
- Maintain regular communication with your supervisor and other Learning Assistants.
- Attend required weekly meeting with the instructor(s) and other Learning Assistants.
- Passed math course in which applicant is applying to be a Learning Assistant or placed into a higher math course.
- Maintain a minimum of 2.75 GPA
- First-generation college student (neither parent has earned a 4-year degree)
- Applicant has recently taken the math class in which they are applying to be a Learning Assistant at SLCC.
- Applicant has attended SLCC for at least one semester.
