We are rapidly expanding and have many roles to fill due to a new contract for after school programming in San Jose Unified School District. Instructors will be responsible lead a class of 20 students through a culinary and mindfulness lesson. Students will learn how to cook delicious vegetarian food with mindfulness and care. During your interview you'll be asked to demonstrate basic knife skills as well as classroom management skills (attention getters, praising and consequences). Instructors will be provided with a structured curriculum, recipes, a shopping list, all of the culinary tools, and a co-teacher from the after school program who will focus on the the behavior management.
Class Sessions:
2:30 - 6:30pm Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday plus additional hours for shopping. Required Qualifications and Experience 2+ years of experience or equivalent as an instructor in an afterschool program or summer camp Experience teaching any of the following topics: cooking, yoga, science, or outdoor education to school aged youth Must be able to work Monday - Thursday during after-school hours and commit to an academic school year (October 15 through late May) required for the position. Must have previous experience working with kids and the ability to independently lead and supervise up to 20 students while implementing enrichment activities. Will be expected to complete all mandated training Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds, and be capable of standing and walking for extended periods of timeMust be able to manage and oversee a large group of kids Is responsible for the set up and breakdown of the culinary classroom, including cleaning of supplies, storing supplies and shopping for ingredients. Attend weekly site staff meetings Adhere to the philosophy and vision of the program Displays a positive leadership role that adheres to our company policies Desired Qualifications and Experience Commitment to providing an education experience that is child-centered, safe, and inclusive Ability to stay calm and keep your sense of humor in a fast-paced environment Willingness to follow directions and to work in a team Confidence and ability to take initiative and have a leadership role Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, upbeat, positive, mature attitude and respectful communication approach Ability to do yoga poses and play active games with campers Ability to stand, bend, stoop, sit, walk, twist and turn, and lift 25 pounds Experience in the kitchen and can follow a recipe Knowledge of farmers markets, sustainable cooking practices, breathing, yoga and meditation Fun talents such as games, storytelling, music, arts and crafts Food Handler Certified (reimbursed) First Aid/CPR Certified (reimbursed) Ability to walk children safely from one site to another and adhere to safety standards.
