Our programs create pathways to postsecondary education and careers in science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics. By delivering programming in community centers, schools, youth organizations, and residential communities, STEAMsport helps remove transportation and access barriers that can prevent young people from participating in high quality STEAM learning. The Video Game Design Instructor and Esports Coach will lead engaging, age appropriate learning experiences that combine video game creation, digital creativity, teamwork, and competitive Esports. The instructor will teach students how to plan, build, test, revise, and present original games using Flowlab.io, while coaching healthy gaming habits, communication, sportsmanship, strategic thinking, and team leadership. This role requires a patient, energetic educator who can manage an active afterschool environment and make technical concepts understandable for learners with different skill levels. The successful applicant must have working knowledge of Flowlab.io and be able to demonstrate its visual logic system, game mechanics, level design tools, testing features, and game publishing or sharing workflows. - Plan and deliver project based lessons using Flowlab.io for beginner and intermediate students.
- Teach the complete game development cycle, including ideation, story and character development, level design, game mechanics, visual logic, playtesting, debugging, revision, and presentation.
- Guide students in creating original games that are functional, age appropriate, and aligned with program learning goals.
- Differentiate instruction for varied ages, learning needs, and levels of technical experience.
- Connect game development to careers in software engineering, graphic design, sound design, project management, cybersecurity, and the broader gaming industry. Esports Coaching
- Coach students in communication, teamwork, strategic decision making, leadership, resilience, and good sportsmanship.
- Teach game rules, roles, team strategies, practice routines, and competition readiness for approved age appropriate esports titles.
- Organize practices, scrimmages, team selection activities, tournaments, and student showcases as assigned.
- Model healthy gaming habits, including time management, respectful online behavior, digital citizenship, and appropriate responses to winning and losing.
- Monitor gameplay and enforce all STEAMsport safety, conduct, and technology use expectations. Program Operations and Student Support
- Maintain a safe, inclusive, structured, and encouraging learning environment.
- Prepare lesson materials, equipment, student accounts, games, and technology before each session.
- Track attendance, participation, skill development, completed projects, and other required program outcomes.
- Provide timely updates to program leadership regarding student progress, behavioral concerns, technology needs, incidents, and achievements.
- Safeguard computers, gaming consoles, controllers, headsets, software accounts, and other program equipment; report damage or technical problems promptly.
- Collaborate with site staff, families, volunteers, partners, and guest professionals to support program success.
- Assist with family events, competitions, expos, demonstrations, and other STEAMsport activities when scheduled.
- Flowlab.io proficiency is required. Applicants must be able to create and troubleshoot games, explain behaviors and visual logic, and teach students how to build and improve playable projects.
- At least one year of experience teaching, mentoring, coaching, or supervising youth in an afterschool, school, recreation, esports, or community setting.
- Practical knowledge of video game design principles, esports competition, gaming hardware, and common computer applications.
- Ability to explain technical concepts clearly and support both beginning and experienced learners.
- Strong classroom and behavior management skills, sound judgment, patience, reliability, and a positive approach to youth development.
- Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to work collaboratively with staff, families, community partners, and students from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to pass all required criminal background checks, fingerprinting, and child safety screening before working with students.
- Associate degree or higher in game design, computer science, education, digital media, information technology, recreation, or a related field.
- Experience coaching an organized esports team or preparing youth for tournaments and competitive play.
- Experience with additional game development platforms such as Scratch, MakeCode Arcade, GameMaker, Gamefroot, or similar tools.
- Knowledge of streaming, broadcasting, content creation, graphic design, audio production, or esports event operations.
- CPR and First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain certification within the timeframe established by STEAMsport.

- Work takes place in an active afterschool setting with frequent movement, conversation, sound, and competing demands for attention.
- The role may require extended periods of sitting or standing, use of computers and gaming equipment, and moving or setting up supplies weighing up to 25 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Occasional evening or weekend availability may be required for competitions, showcases, staff training, or special events.
