Job Description

Lead STEM Instructor — Whiz Kid Academy (Part-Time/Contract) Picture a classroom full of kids elbow-deep in LEGO bricks, arguing over the best way to build a bridge that won't collapse — that's a typical Tuesday for a Whiz Kid Academy instructor. We bring hands-on STEM enrichment into schools and community spaces across the region, and we're looking for someone who can walk into a room and make that kind of energy happen. The role, in short You'll run our signature LEGO-based STEM sessions for students PreK-8th grade, adjusting on the fly for whatever group of kids shows up that day. Some sessions are calm and focused, some are chaos in the best way — the job is knowing how to read the room and lead either one. Along the way, you're also the person modeling patience, curiosity, and a growth mindset for a bunch of kids who are watching how you handle a tricky build just as much as they're building it themselves. Day-to-day responsibilities Lead LEGO-based lessons and building challenges tailored to different age groups Build a classroom vibe where every student feels included and genuinely excited to be there Adjust activities in the moment based on energy, skill level, and group dynamics Manage safety, behavior, and a positive group culture throughout each session Encourage and celebrate students as they work through challenges Coordinate with co-instructors and the WKA team to keep the program consistent across sites Show up for community events — STEM Family Nights, back-to-school nights, end-of-session showcases Track attendance, participation, and any incidents accurately Help with setup, cleanup, and general care of LEGO materials What we're looking for Real experience with kids — education, childcare, tutoring, coaching, or similar Energetic, patient, and genuinely adaptable when plans change mid-session An interest in STEM, hands-on learning, or creative play (you don't need to be an engineer — you need to like building things with kids) Clear, professional communication with students, staff, and parents Dependability — shows up on time, follows through, takes the work seriously High school diploma or equivalent (coursework in education, child development, or a STEM field is a plus) CPR/First Aid certified, or willing to get certified before starting Practical requirements Reliable personal vehicle and valid license — you'll be traveling between school sites Personal laptop for prep and light admin work Comfortable standing, walking, and staying active throughout a session Able to lift/carry up to 25 lbs of materials About Whiz Kid Academy We're a woman-owned, WBENC-certified STEM enrichment company reaching 1,000+ students a year across Maryland — in-school, after-school, and summers. We believe joyful, high-quality STEM learning should be something every kid gets access to, and that starts with the people running the room. If you want part-time or contract work that actually feels meaningful, we'd love to hear from you. Whiz Kid Academy msheather@whizkidacademy.com | (301) 388-5485 | whizkidacademy.com
