Summary:
NativityMiguel Middle School (NMMS) seeks a dedicated and empathetic educator to serve as a Social Studies instructor for students in grades 5 through 8. The ideal candidate is also comfortable teaching Religious Studies within a faith-based educational environment focused on character formation, reflection, service, and community engagement. A strong candidate for this position has a mastery of social studies teaching principles and curriculum. They understand the use of data to improve student outcomes and enjoy helping students develop their voices, critical thinking skills, historical understanding, and sense of identity within their communities and the wider world. They also possess a cultural sensitivity and awareness which strengthens their ability to provide students from diverse backgrounds with new perspectives of the world. This teacher will be responsible for teaching a mix of Social Studies and Religious Studies classes in 2026-2027. In addition to teaching responsibilities, all NativityMiguel Middle School faculty are required to be on campus from 8:15 AM to 4:15 PM and to oversee duties as assigned by the principal. These may include occasional responsibilities outside of regular school hours. Additional stipend opportunities may exist to serve as a club advisor, coach, or program coordinator. The ideal candidate for this position will: Use "Understanding By Design" or "Universal Design for Learning" to develop, implement, and evaluate lesson plans for units of study in science. Be familiar with standards-aligned ELA and Social Studies instruction and comfortable incorporating text-rich investigations, writing instruction, discussion, and project-based learning into classroom experiences. Be comfortable facilitating conversations connected to character formation, ethics, service, leadership, faith, and community engagement within the context of Religious Studies instruction. Support the development of students' reading comprehension, writing, communication, and analytical thinking skills across content areas. Use high-quality assessment techniques to provide timely feedback to students and families. Recognize the unique needs of their students and endeavor to meet those needs in- and outside of the classroom. Demonstrate energy and enthusiasm for working with students and families from underserved backgrounds. Collaborate with teachers, the school principal, and student support team to create a warm, inclusive, and high-performing environment for all community members. Apply appropriate intervention strategies for students identified as requiring support for ELA learning and development. Deploy instructional strategies and approaches that reflect best practices for engaging students in sustained inquiry, reflection, discussion, and collaborative learning. Use assessment data, including MAP and NYS testing, to inform instructional practices and planning. Be open to teaching content in other subject areas, with Religious Studies a priority and STEM/STEAM
a plus. In addition, the ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and skills: Bachelor's degree in a related field (or actively working toward completion of a degree) required. Certification in Social Studies, ELA, or related fields preferred, but not required. Passionate about supporting student growth in a faith-based, urban education setting. Strong skill set utilizing appropriate educational technologies, including Google Workspace for Education, Smartboards, and Chromebooks.
