Job Description

Day One Tech
STEM THE BASICS
Help young people discover what they can do. Day One Tech is hiring 2-4 team members to lead youth afterschool programs this term, with the possibility of continuing throughout the school year. Our programs start with what young people are into - robotics, slime, games, digital media, design, beauty, building and turn those interests into opportunities to experiment, solve problems, collaborate, and develop real skills. We provide a culturally responsive environment that helps support young people to feel safe to learn. We're looking for someone who brings curiosity, positive energy, and the ability to connect with young people. Someone who can lead a group, encourage students through challenges, and help them feel capable. You might guide students through a robot rescue mission, help them investigate what changes a slime recipe, or support a creative design project. The activity gets their attention. What they learn through it is the purpose.
Pay:
Starting at $19/hour, with higher starting rates based on verified experience leading afterschool programs.
Location:
Schools in (North Portland and/or East Portland)
Schedule:
1-5 days a week
Hours:
10-20 hours per week, depending on your availability and program needs. Once a schedule is established, your weekly hours will be consistent during the program term.
Start date:
Hiring immediately.
Position:
Part-time, with opportunities to grow with Day One and potentially add hours through other programs and projects. Your main role will be leading afterschool programs. As we get to know your skills and interests, there may be opportunities to take on additional responsibilities and work with other Day One programs. You do not need to be an expert in every subject we offer. We want to understand what you bring, how you work with youth, and what you're interested in learning. Interested? Apply through Indeed with your relevant experience and afternoon availability. Read on for more about our approach and the role.
MORE DETAIL
What makes our programs different Start with student interests, then build toward deeper learning. Play and exploration are entry points. From there, students take on meaningful challenges, develop skills, and work toward a mission, finished product, or demonstration.
For example:
Robotics and rescue missions: Students build, navigate, test ideas, and work together to solve a challenge.
Slime and materials science:
Students predict outcomes, measure ingredients, change variables, and explain their discoveries.
Media and creative projects:
Students develop ideas, create something original, and communicate through video, art, or storytelling.
Style and design:
Students explore technique, materials, self-expression, and with older groups - entrepreneurship. Braiding to Nails. These are examples of our wider program offerings, not a requirement that one instructor teach them all. Our goal is for students to leave more capable than when they arrived - with greater confidence, stronger skills, and a sense that their ideas matter. How we work with young people We use culturally responsive, trauma-informed practices to meet students where they are and help them move forward. In everyday teaching, that means building relationships, respecting students' backgrounds and perspectives, giving clear expectations, and responding to challenges with patience. Our
LOOK. THINK. ACT.
approach encourages students to observe, ask questions, plan, create, test, revise, and try again. Reading, writing, communication, and reflection are built into the experience. Students might explain a design choice, record an observation, compare solutions, or present what they made. The instructor's role is to provide structure while making room for student ideas. You'll help students think through problems, participate meaningfully, and recognize their own progress. What you'll do Prepare for and lead hands-on afterschool activities. Explain tasks clearly and adapt your approach to the group. Build positive relationships and encourage participation. Manage group behavior and support a safe, welcoming environment. Help students work through frustration, collaborate, and try again. Organize materials, set up activities, and clean up afterward. Communicate with Day One and school partners about student progress and program needs. This is active, people-centered work. It takes preparation, flexibility, and the ability to stay engaged with a group - not just enthusiasm for the activity itself. Who we're looking for We're interested in people who enjoy helping young people grow and are excited by creative, hands-on education. Tell us about your experience leading afterschool programs, teaching activities, mentoring youth, or supporting groups. Experience with SUN Community Schools or their partner organizations is especially valuable; comparable youth-program experience is also welcome. We value reliability, patience, clear communication, and a willingness to learn. If you bring additional skills in technology, making, media, design, entrepreneurship, or community work, we'd like to hear about those too. Hours, pay, and room to grow This role offers 10-20 hours per week, depending on your availability and our program needs. Once we establish your schedule, you can expect consistent weekly hours during the program term. Starting pay is $19 per hour. Higher starting rates are based on verified experience leading afterschool programs. After your first term, we'll review your performance and discuss opportunities for increased pay, additional hours, or expanded responsibilities based on your skills, interests, and program needs. We're interested in team members who may want to grow with us. Beyond afterschool instruction, opportunities may include supporting other youth programs, events, day-to-day operations, or projects such as Rooted in Tech. Our priority is finding strong afterschool instructors. Additional hours and responsibilities depend on available work and fit; they are not guaranteed or required for this position. School district clearance Already approved to work in one of our partner school districts? Please mention it in your application. Existing clearance may help speed up onboarding, subject to district confirmation and any additional requirements. How to apply We're looking to hire immediately and have a straightforward interview process: Apply through Indeed with your resume or a summary of your relevant experience. Include your available days and times. Complete a short Google Form with a few initial interview questions. We'll send you the link after reviewing your application. Record your responses through VideoAsk. This lets us get to know you beyond your resume, and you can complete it without scheduling a live video call. Meet with us in person. Finalists will be invited to discuss the role, their experience, and opportunities with Day One. We'll provide clear instructions at each step and move quickly with candidates who are a strong fit.
