Based in Connecticut, the firm conducts approximately twelve auctions annually across a diverse range of collecting categories, including Americana and folk art, Native American art, Modern art, Outsider Art, gems and jewelry, and medical and scientific objects. New England Auctions seeks a Cataloguer to support the Head Cataloguer in the research, cataloguing, and preparation of property for sale. Responsibilities Research and catalog property across a broad range of collecting categories, preparing accurate and concise descriptions for online and print catalogs. Research and verify artists, makers, titles, dates, materials, dimensions, provenance, literature, exhibition history, and other relevant information. Utilize auction databases, museum collections, scholarly publications, archives, and other authoritative sources to support cataloguing and attribution. Assist with condition documentation, photography, lot organization, image review, and final catalog proofreading. Work closely with the Head Cataloguer, specialists, consignors, photographers, and operations staff to ensure accurate and timely preparation of sales. Manage multiple cataloguing projects while meeting production schedules and auction deadlines. Assist with research related to estimates, market activity, provenance, and specialist inquiries. Maintain organized research and cataloguing records and contribute to special collections and single-owner sales as needed. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Art History, American Studies, Museum Studies, Decorative Arts, Material Culture, or a related field; graduate study is a plus. Previous experience in an auction house, gallery, museum, appraisal firm, antiques business, library, archive, or related field preferred. Excellent research, writing, editing, and fact-checking skills, with exceptional attention to detail. Demonstrated interest or knowledge in one or more of our specialty areas, particularly American art and decorative arts, Americana and folk art, Native American material culture, Modern art, Outsider Art, or gems and jewelry. Ability to distinguish clearly between established fact, attribution, and opinion. Ability to work quickly and efficiently while maintaining a high level of accuracy, particularly in a deadline-driven environment. Highly organized and self-motivated, with the ability to prioritize competing assignments and manage multiple projects. Strong computer skills and familiarity with auction databases and research resources.
