Job Description

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens seeks to hire one School & Docent Programs Manager to lead engaging and inclusive formal learning experiences for students, teachers, and volunteer docents. The School & Docent Programs Manager will develop, implement, and evaluate a broad range of welcoming and accessible educational experiences that connect audiences with the Museum's collection, special exhibitions, and historic gardens. This role will oversee school tour programs and the Museum's Docent Corps while supporting lifelong and multigenerational learning through dynamic, standards-aligned programming for students, teachers, community-based program providers, and visitors of all backgrounds and abilities. Working collaboratively with the Curatorial and Learning & Engagement staff, this position plays a key role in fostering meaningful visitor engagement, supporting equity and inclusion, and creating high-quality educational experiences that inspire curiosity, connection, and learning.
Essential Duties:
Supports the Cummer Museum's mission, vision and values by exhibiting the following behaviors: excellence and competence, collaboration, innovation, respect of individual, commitment to our community, and accountability and ownership. Manages school tour programs and develops relationships with teachers and schools to support meaningful student learning experiences. Oversees curriculum alignment and ensures all formal learning programs meet local and national education standards. Leads the Docent Corps, including:
  • Recruitment, onboarding, and orientation of new Docents
  • Initial and ongoing training, mentoring, and professional development
  • Evaluation of Docent performance and provision of coaching, feedback, and corrective action
  • Management of volunteer database and scheduling (Volgistics)
  • Coordination of Summer Docent Corps programs Develops exhibition-specific docent training materials in collaboration with the Associate Curator.
Coordinates docent scheduling and prepares docents to lead adult tours in collaboration with the Youth, Family, & Adult Learning Manager. Prepares and supports docents to deliver inclusive and accessible tour experiences. Works in coordination with Visitor Experience staff to support scheduling, reservations, and logistics for school and docent-led programs. Collaborates with Curatorial and Youth, Family, & Adult Learning Manager to ensure interpretive consistency between docent-led tours and program-based learning experiences. Translates exhibition content into docent-led tour experiences, including training materials and facilitation strategies, in collaboration with Curatorial and Learning & Engagement staff. Evaluates program outcomes and visitor engagement, using data to inform program improvements. Tracks attendance, revenue, and program evaluation metrics for reporting and strategic planning. Works with the Reservationist to maintain accurate program setup, registration, and reporting in Altru in alignment with departmental standards. Supports school and docent training programs, workshops, and related learning experiences. Participates in Museum events such as member openings, Summer at the Cummer, Arts for All Festival, and special community events. Performs other job duties, as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
BS or BA in Art History or Education, African American Studies, Asian Studies, or another humanistic discipline preferred. Flexibility and respect for cultural diversity. Experience in art education, art history, studio art, or arts and healing. Three years of experience teaching or working with children/individuals/families/community members in the visual arts in an arts center, school, after school, museum, etc. Knowledge of current education practices, visitor experience theories and local/national education standards including community engagement strategies, adult learning theory and Universal Design and experiential teaching practices in adult education. Knowledge of the Cummer Museum collection (art and gardens) is preferable. Experience working with and designing programs for individuals with differing abilities. Experience managing volunteers. Experience developing and delivering digital programs (i.e., using Teams, Zoom, Google Classroom, pre-recorded visual media, podcasting) and comfort with being on camera for virtual programs. Computer skills in Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel and Outlook), Volgistics volunteer management software or ability to learn new software quickly. Ability to coordinate multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced work environment. Self-starter with strong problem-solving skills and sound judgment, able to work independently and collaboratively while making informed decisions and managing competing priorities . Ability to communicate in the written and spoken word with tact, diplomacy, and/or authority when necessary. Ability to work with co-workers, volunteers, and the public in a professional manner in a variety of tasks. Be open to learning and adapt to changes as they arise within the museum. Ability to frequently lift and carry up to 25lbs. Ability to bend, stoop, lift, reach, push, pull, twist, walk, crouch, and squat. Valid Florida driver's license.
Physical Demands/Work Environment:
This position operates primarily in a professional office environment. The role requires extended periods of sitting and computer use, with occasional standing and walking throughout the Museum campus. The employee must be able to communicate effectively in person, by phone, and electronically. Occasional light lifting of materials up to 20 pounds may be required. The role may involve limited outdoor exposure when moving between buildings or supporting Museum events. Remote work : Possible
