Visitor & Guest Services Position Overview Bloomsburie is seeking a Volunteer Manager to support the National Coast Guard Museum in New London, Connecticut . The Volunteer Manager will serve as a vital link between the National Coast Guard Museum and the community, recruiting, coordinating, training, and retaining volunteers and docents who support daily museum operations. This position will help build and maintain an engaged volunteer network supporting roles such as gallery docents, museum ambassadors, educational assistants, and administrative support. Key Responsibilities Recruit volunteers for Government-approved roles, including gallery docents, museum ambassadors, educational assistants, and administrative support. Interview volunteer candidates and collect or submit required volunteer-vetting information in accordance with Government procedures. Final access and suitability determinations remain with the Government. Train volunteers in the museum's history, mission, visitor services, and emergency safety protocols. Match volunteer skills and interests with museum operational needs. Manage volunteer shift calendars to ensure appropriate coverage during peak hours and events. Maintain accurate databases of volunteer hours and contributions. Serve as a primary point of contact for volunteers and help integrate them into the broader museum staff culture. Organize annual volunteer appreciation events, luncheons, milestone awards, and other recognition activities. Produce newsletters, web updates, notifications, and other communications to keep the volunteer network informed and engaged. Coordinate with museum operations, education, and visitor services teams to support volunteer staffing needs. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Social Sciences, Communications, or Museum Studies. Two (2) to four (4) years of experience in volunteer management, community outreach, or program coordination, preferably in a nonprofit or cultural setting. Certified in Volunteer Administration (CVA) is highly desired. Experience sourcing diverse volunteer demographics, from students to retirees. Experience developing educational modules that train non-experts to interact with the public or assist with collections. Proficiency in volunteer management tracking databases. Clear understanding of legal distinctions between volunteer and employee labor laws. Preferred Qualifications Comfort delivering presentations, leading large orientations, and representing the museum externally. Diplomatic interpersonal skills to manage diverse personalities and handle performance issues within a volunteer pool. Ability to tailor communication approaches across generational groups. Experience creating non-monetary incentives and appreciation events to drive volunteer retention. The Volunteer Manager will coordinate closely with volunteers, the Education Program Manager, other museum staff, and designated Government points of contact. The Volunteer Manager may be scheduled during core museum operating hours of 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and may be required to support weekends, holidays, special events, ceremonies, ship commissionings, and surge periods associated with the museum's 363-day-per-year operation. The position requires regular interaction with volunteers, museum personnel, visitors, and other stakeholders and may require walking throughout public galleries, offices, education spaces, and event areas.
