Responsibilities:
Building People A. Develop Worship Leaders Invest relationally in musicians, vocalists, and other individuals involved in Covenant's worship ministry. Identify, invite, and develop individuals with musical, creative, and worship-leadership gifts. Create opportunities for multiple voices and personalities to provide visible leadership in worship rather than relying upon a single worship leader. Provide encouragement, coaching, spiritual formation, and constructive feedback that helps worship-team members grow both personally and musically. Cultivate a worship culture characterized by preparation, humility, excellence, hospitality, and shared ministry. B. Develop an Expanding Worship Culture Help the congregation participate actively in worship rather than experience worship primarily as an audience. Introduce new songs and worship practices thoughtfully while maintaining sufficient familiarity for meaningful congregational participation. Work developmentally toward a worship culture that reflects Covenant's aspiration to become an increasingly multicultural and multiracial congregation. Seek opportunities to broaden Covenant's musical vocabulary, worship influences, leadership voices, and cultural expressions as relationships and congregational diversity develop. Help create worship environments in which people from different backgrounds, generations, and levels of church experience can find meaningful points of participation. C. Participate in Covenant's Missional Life Understand worship as an expression of Covenant's larger mission in the community rather than an activity limited to Sunday morning. Support worship experiences connected to community outreach, mission initiatives, and other opportunities that take the church beyond its building. II. Building Teams A. Worship Arts Team Build sufficient depth within the worship team to support healthy rotations and sustainable volunteer participation. Coordinate weekly communication with worship-team members regarding music, schedules, rehearsals, expectations, and service details. Lead a weekly Thursday evening rehearsal that prepares musicians spiritually, relationally, and musically for Sunday worship. Foster a team culture in which volunteers are valued as ministry partners rather than simply utilized to accomplish weekly tasks. B. Worship Planning Team Participate actively in the Worship Planning Team led by the Lead Pastor. Collaborate with the team in developing the complete worship experience, including music, liturgy, creative elements, transitions, special moments, and overall service flow. Select and recommend music that supports the theological and thematic direction established through the worship-planning process. C. Staff Collaboration Participate in regular staff meetings and contribute to the broader ministry planning and organizational life of Covenant. Collaborate closely with the Production and Design Specialist to ensure that audio, lighting, video, staging, and other production elements effectively support worship. Collaborate with Communications staff to ensure that worship-related information, special events, music, and creative elements are communicated effectively. Maintain strong and consistent communication with the Lead Pastor regarding worship direction, team development, challenges, and emerging opportunities. III. Building Systems A. Weekly Worship Organize and implement the musical components of Covenant's weekly contemporary worship service. Serve regularly as an upfront worship leader while intentionally sharing leadership with other capable team members. Prepare music, arrangements, keys, charts, recordings, schedules, and other resources necessary for musicians and vocalists to prepare successfully. Coordinate weekly worship details with the Lead Pastor, Worship Planning Team, and Production and Design Specialist. Ensure that worship music and transitions are well prepared and contribute to a cohesive worship experience. Evaluate worship regularly and make adjustments that strengthen congregational engagement and team effectiveness. B. Worship Planning and Administration Attend and participate in the weekly worship-planning meeting. Maintain worship-team schedules and communicate upcoming needs sufficiently in advance. Plan music strategically across sermon series, seasons of the Christian year, and special services rather than selecting music solely on a week-to-week basis. Maintain appropriate digital and administrative systems for music libraries, worship schedules, volunteer communication, and service planning. Manage the worship-arts portion of the church budget responsibly and communicate anticipated needs to the Lead Pastor. Maintain appropriate licensing and permissions related to music and worship resources in coordination with church administration. C. Special Worship Experiences Plan and provide musical leadership for significant worship services and seasons including Christmas, Easter, Holy Week, and other special services. Coordinate worship leadership for weddings, funerals, memorial services, and other special services as requested as part of the responsibilities and compensation of this position. Adapt worship leadership appropriately for services and events that differ from Covenant's typical Sunday-morning environment. Participate in planning and implementing worship experiences that may occur outdoors, in community settings, or through emerging forms of church and ministry. D. Weekly Rhythm and Time Management The Director of Worship Arts is expected to manage the 20-hour work week around the rhythms and needs of worship ministry. Regular responsibilities will include Sunday morning worship, Thursday evening rehearsal, the weekly worship-planning meeting, staff meeting, team communication, musical preparation, individual practice, scheduling, and administrative responsibilities. Because worship ministry includes special seasons and events, flexibility in weekly scheduling will be necessary, with hours managed in coordination with the Lead Pastor.
