Job Description
Gallery Director Position Summary Modernist Cuisine Gallery is seeking a Gallery Director to lead its New York gallery at the Zebra Building in West Chelsea. The gallery represents the fine art photography of chef, author, inventor, and scientist Nathan Myhrvold. As the flagship physical location for Modernist Cuisine Gallery, the New York gallery represents an opportunity to help redefine [JL1] a decade long gallery's identity, operating model, collector experience, while establishing a foundation for long-term success. The Gallery Director will serve as the primary ambassador for the gallery, introducing collectors and visitors to the artistic vision, photographic techniques, and body of work while building relationships with collectors, advisors, designers, in New York and internationally. Additionally, the Gallery Director will lead how the New York location presents the work, engages its audiences, supports collectors, and serves as a model for a new era of mid-market galleries in New York City. The Gallery Director position is a client-facing leadership role combining fine art sales, collector development, gallery operations, team management, and events. The successful candidate will be commercially minded, entrepreneurial, and capable of establishing a distinctive destination responsive to the evolving expectations of today's collectors. The role requires someone who can move fluidly between strategy and execution: setting the vision for the gallery [JL2] while also building the systems, standards, relationships, and daily practices that bring that vision to life.
Reports to:
Director of Operations, with regular interaction with gallery leadership and ownership. Duties and Responsibilities Build and lead all day-to-day gallery operations, including sales systems, client records, inventory, artwork logistics, installations, and operational processes. Establish the New York gallery as the flagship physical location for Modernist Cuisine Gallery and define practices and procedures for an in-person, experience-first brand redevelopment. Implement and help define the gallery's long-term vision, positioning, programming, collector strategy, and operating model. Develop and expand the gallery's presence as a distinctive destination within New York's art, design, architecture, culinary, and cultural communities. Establish a consistent and elevated standard for the gallery's visual presentation, client experience, communications, events, and day-to-day operations. Train, coach, mentor, and manage Art Consultant staff. Develop and execute strategies to achieve monthly and annual gallery sales goals by analyzing sales performance, collector activity, and pipeline development. Build and maintain strong relationships with existing collectors through ongoing outreach, collection development conversations, private appointments, and personalized service. Proactively identify and cultivate new collectors and sales opportunities. Develop relationships with art advisors, interior designers, architects, hospitality professionals, corporate clients, and other potential partners. Oversee gallery events and installations, coordinating with building operations and hospitality partners to deliver a seamless guest experience. Collaborate with internal teams and building partners on programming, events, private gatherings, and other initiatives that deepen and expand collector engagement while enhancing the gallery experience. Identify opportunities for private appointments, special events, partnerships, and other experiences that increase gallery visibility and create meaningful sales opportunities. Required Skills and Abilities Excellent sales, relationship management, and client development skills with the ability to build trust with collectors and high-touch clients. Entrepreneurial mindset and the ability to help build, shape, and establish a new flagship location. Strategic and operationally minded with strong project-management skills and the ability to lead both long-term initiatives and daily execution. Highly organized, accurate, and detail oriented. Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills. Comfortable managing multiple priorities in a dynamic, client-facing environment. Strong judgment, discretion, and professionalism. Ability to establish clear standards, systems, and processes in an evolving organization. Experience using CRM, gallery management, or sales pipeline systems. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and related business tools. Experience 5+ years of professional experience working within the New York City gallery market, including gallery management, fine art sales, collector development, or a closely related client-facing role. Experience helping launch, establish, reposition, or grow a gallery, showroom, cultural destination, or other client-facing creative business strongly preferred. Experience managing and developing a sales team. Established network within New York's art community strongly preferred; relationships across design, architecture, hospitality, and culinary communities are also valued. Experience with events, private client experiences, or other high-touch hospitality environments preferred. Demonstrated passion for fine art, photography, visual storytelling, and collector engagement. Ability to think creatively about how a physical gallery can serve as a flagship, cultural destination, and platform for long-term brand development. Education Bachelor's degree preferred, or equivalent professional experience. Compensation Competitive base salary plus commission tied to gallery sales.Work Location:
