The Concord Conservatory of Music (CCM) seeks an engaging, energetic, and community-minded musician to serve as our Mandolin and American Roots Community Instructor. We are looking for a skilled mandolinist, with guitar and fiddle experience strongly preferred, who is passionate about teaching, performing, and bringing people together through music. This is a unique opportunity to inherit an established mandolin studio, lead CCM's popular weekly Bluegrass Jam, and help cultivate a vibrant community of students and amateur musicians who share a love of bluegrass, folk, old-time, and other American Roots traditions. About CCM Founded in 2005, CCM is a nonprofit community music center serving students of all ages and abilities through private lessons, ensembles, classes, performance opportunities, and community programs. We believe music education is at its best when it fosters both artistic growth and meaningful human connection. Schedule One afternoon/evening teaching day per week, with opportunities to expand teaching responsibilities over time. Position Summary The Mandolin and American Roots Community Instructor will teach private lessons; lead CCM's established weekly Bluegrass Jam and lead a thriving American Roots community within the CCM. The ideal candidate is more than an excellent teacher. They are a natural community builder who inspires participation, welcomes newcomers, connects musicians, and creates opportunities for students and adult amateurs alike to experience the joy of making music together. A central responsibility of this position is leading CCM's weekly Bluegrass Jam, an established and well-loved gathering that serves as the heart of our American Roots program. The instructor will help foster an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere while encouraging participation from musicians of varying ages, backgrounds, and experience levels. In addition to an existing teaching studio and weekly jam, the instructor will have opportunities over time to develop ensembles, workshops, and group classes that respond to student interest and community demand. Program development is encouraged but is not an expectation upon hiring. Responsibilities
  • Teach engaging private lessons for students ranging from beginner to advanced levels.
  • Teach mandolin as the primary instrument; guitar and fiddle instruction are highly desirable.
  • Lead CCM's weekly Bluegrass Jam and create a welcoming environment that encourages participation and community building.
  • Encourage students to participate in jams, ensembles, recitals, workshops, and other performance opportunities.
  • Develop lesson plans that support technical growth, musicianship, creativity, and confidence.
  • Coach ensembles and collaborative music-making experiences.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to support and grow CCM's American Roots offerings.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, recitals, and Conservatory events.
  • Fulfill general faculty responsibilities as outlined in the CCM Faculty Handbook.
Qualifications:
  • Strong mandolin performance skills.
  • Guitar and fiddle proficiency strongly preferred.
  • Experience teaching students of varying ages and abilities.
  • Knowledge of bluegrass, folk, old-time, and related American Roots traditions.
  • Experience leading jams, ensembles, or group music-making activities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A warm, positive, and inclusive teaching style.
  • Commitment to community-based music education and lifelong music-making. Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in music or a related field.
  • Three or more years of teaching experience.
  • Experience leading workshops, ensembles, community music programs, or informal music gatherings.
  • Active participation in the bluegrass, folk, or acoustic music community.

Organization:
Concord Conservatory of Music is a nonprofit music school serving Concord, MA, and 16 surrounding communities. We are a creative and supportive community of musicians of all ages and levels. Opportunities to perform, individually and in groups, challenge students and build their sense of confidence and pride. Community-based programming invites others to experience and appreciate not just the music, but also the joy of creating it. CCM offers a rigorous education for musicians at all levels, for ages one and up. Over 500 students participate in weekly private and/or group lessons, ensembles, and workshops. The school's faculty includes 37 professional music educators teaching 17 instruments and voice. CCM also presents approximately six concerts a year for the public. To reach even more community members, CCM provides student performances in the community, programs for individuals with unique needs, including Singing with Parkinson's Chorus, and music classes specifically for children with developmental disabilities. CCM also offers financial assistance and reduced or no-cost programs, including group ukulele lessons at the Boys and Girls Club of Assabet Valley.
