K-8 Position Summary The Music/Strings Teacher provides engaging, developmentally appropriate music instruction for students in grades K-8, including general music for all K-8 classes and string-instrument instruction for selected students. The teacher will develop students' understanding and appreciation of music while building skills in rhythm, notation, music theory, performance, and instrumental technique. The position also supports school performances and provides students with opportunities to demonstrate their musical growth. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Plan and deliver standards-aligned general music and strings instruction appropriate to students' grade and skill levels. Teach fundamental music concepts, including rhythm, melody, notation, music theory, ear training, and sight-reading. Provide instruction in string instruments, including violin, viola, cello, and/or bass. Teach proper instrumental technique, posture, care, tuning, practice habits, and performance skills. Differentiate instruction for beginning and developing musicians. Organize and lead individual, small-group, and ensemble instruction and rehearsals. Assess student learning and musical development and provide meaningful feedback. Prepare students for school concerts, assemblies, recitals, and other appropriate performances. Introduce students to a variety of musical genres, traditions, cultures, composers, and historical periods. Establish and maintain positive classroom expectations and effective classroom management. Maintain an organized music classroom and oversee the appropriate use, storage, inventory, and care of instruments and equipment. Communicate with families regarding student progress, performances, instrument needs, and other program information as appropriate. Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and other staff to support school programs, events, and student success. Participate in staff meetings, professional development, school activities, and other duties consistent with the position. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Music Education, Music, Music Performance, or a related field preferred. Appropriate Michigan teaching certification, authorization, or permit as required for the assignment. Experience teaching music to elementary and/or middle school students preferred. Demonstrated proficiency in string-instrument instruction. Knowledge of music theory, instructional practices, and age-appropriate music education. Ability to effectively manage a K-8 classroom and engage students with varying levels of musical experience. Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to plan and lead student performances and musical ensembles. Ability to work collaboratively with students, families, staff, and administration. Must satisfy all Academy employment, background-check, and other applicable requirements. Physical & Working Conditions The position requires regular classroom instruction and rehearsals, standing for extended periods, demonstrating and playing musical instruments, moving throughout the classroom, and assisting with instruments and equipment. Occasional participation in performances or school events outside regular instructional hours may be required.
