$85-$100 per service hour Position Overview Hug Music is seeking experienced and compassionate Music Instructors to provide individualized and adaptive music instruction in clients' homes and community settings throughout New York City. We are particularly interested in instructors who are comfortable adapting their teaching approach for students with different learning styles, developmental needs, special needs, communication styles, and abilities. This opportunity is ideal for professional musicians and educators who would like to add recurring students or community-based programs to their existing schedules. Assignments are matched based on the instructor's availability, geographic preferences, instruments and areas of expertise, experience, and the needs of the student or organization. This is an independent contractor position with variable, assignment-based hours. Contractors may accept or decline individual opportunities, and a specific number of weekly hours is not guaranteed. Areas of Instruction We are currently interested in instructors who teach one or more of the following: Piano Voice Guitar Ukulele Drums and percussion Early childhood music — highly preferred Adaptive music instruction for neurodivergent students — highly preferred General music Group music instruction Other instruments and areas of specializationMulti-instrumental instructors are especially encouraged to apply. Responsibilities Depending on the accepted assignment, responsibilities may include: Providing individual in-home music lessons Providing adaptive music instruction based on the student's learning style and needs Facilitating small-group music classes Teaching music programs in schools, community organizations, and other off-site settings Preparing developmentally and musically appropriate lesson activities Communicating professionally with students, families, organizations, and Hug Music Maintaining reliable attendance and timely communication Traveling independently to accepted assignment locations Qualifications Required qualifications include: Degree-level music training and/or substantial professional music teaching experience Strong proficiency in one or more instruments Experience teaching children and/or adolescents Strong communication and interpersonal skills Reliability and professionalism Ability to work independently in homes and community settings Preferred qualifications include: Experience working with neurodivergent students and individuals with diverse abilities, learning styles, or support needs Experience providing adaptive or individualized music instruction Experience in early childhood music education Experience leading group music classes or community-based music programs Background in music therapy, special education, adaptive music education, early childhood education, or related fields Multi-instrumental skills Background, coursework, or professional experience in music therapy, special education, adaptive music education, early childhood education, or related fields is highly valued. MT-BC and/or LCAT credentials are highly welcomed! Location & Travel Assignments may be available throughout Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and other areas of New York City. During the application and interview process, candidates will be asked about: General weekly availability Neighborhoods and geographic areas they are willing to serve Transportation method Primary and secondary instruments Age groups and populations they have experience teaching Interest in individual, group, in-home, school, and community-based assignments Access to a car is helpful for some assignments but not required . We particularly welcome instructors who are interested in serving their own local communities or who are comfortable traveling to areas with more limited public transportation access.
Compensation Anticipated contract compensation:
$85-$100 per service hour Compensation is agreed upon with each independent contractor and may vary depending on the nature of the assignment, location and travel requirements, ongoing caseload, and other relevant factors. As a general reference, current Hug Music assignments typically fall within the following ranges: Standard assignments: approximately $85 per service hour Contractors maintaining 3 or more active recurring Hug Music assignments : approximately $90 per service hour . Further rate increases may be considered as contractors take on a larger recurring caseload with Hug Music. Designated assignments involving significant travel or limited public transportation access: up to approximately $100 per service hour For assignments consisting of a 45-minute client session , Hug Music generally budgets compensation equivalent to one full service hour. Specific compensation and assignment terms are discussed and mutually agreed upon before an independent contractor accepts an assignment. About Hug Music Hug Music is a music therapy and music education practice based in Forest Hills, Queens, serving children, families, schools, and community organizations throughout New York City. Our programs include music therapy, private and group music instruction, adaptive and inclusive music education, early childhood music programs, and community outreach programs.
