This educator will design and deliver age-appropriate, standards-aligned lessons that develop fundamental motor skills, spatial awareness, sportsmanship, and physical fitness across elementary and middle school grade levels. By creating a safe, active, and supportive gymnasium and outdoor environment, the teacher will inspire students to build confidence, teamwork, and healthy lifestyle habits that support academic success and overall well-being.
Duties/Responsibilities Instruction & Curriculum:
Plan, prepare, and execute energetic, standards-based daily lessons (e.g., SHAPE America/State PE Standards) tailored to the developmental stages of K-8 students. Utilize a variety of instructional strategies—such as cooperative movement games, skill-building drills, fitness challenges, and modified team sports—to ensure high levels of physical activity and engagement.
Assessment & Differentiation:
Design and administer age-appropriate formative and summative assessments, evaluating motor skill development, sportsmanship, participation, and fitness progression. Utilize data to differentiate instruction for varying physical abilities, motor skill levels, and developmental milestones.
Safety & Environment Management:
Establish and maintain a safe, highly structured gym, playground, and athletic environment. Enforce safety rules for equipment use, supervise active play, maintain athletic equipment inventory, and apply proper first aid and risk management protocols.
Collaboration & Communication:
Actively collaborate with grade-level teams, special education staff, and school administration to integrate movement into the broader school curriculum and support school-wide wellness initiatives (e.g., Field Day, brain breaks, walk-a-thons). Maintain open, proactive communication with families regarding physical health, participation, and wellness strategies.
Professional Growth:
Consistently participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with physical education pedagogy, adapted PE strategies, childhood fitness trends, and school safety/CPR certifications.
Qualifications Education & Certification Education:
Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
Certification:
Valid state teaching credential/license in Physical Education (Grades K-8 or K-12). First Aid and CPR/AED certification required.
Experience:
Prior student teaching or professional classroom/gymnasium experience at the elementary or middle school level is highly desirable.
Background:
Clean background check and compliance with all state/district employment requirements. Technical & Equipment Skills Learning Management Systems (LMS): Proficiency with platforms like Google Classroom, Canvas, or Seesaw to share movement goals and communicate with families.
EdTech & PE Technology:
Ability to integrate digital wellness tools, heart rate monitors, fitness tracking apps, or movement-based video software into PE units.
Data & Grading:
Competency in using digital gradebooks and student information systems (e.g., PowerSchool, Infinite Campus) to track attendance, skill assessments, and fitness metrics.
Productivity Suites:
Working knowledge of Google Workspace or Microsoft Office for lesson planning, scheduling, and curriculum mapping.
Core Skills & Competencies Gymnasium & Outdoor Management:
Proven ability to manage large classes of energetic students across diverse age groups (K-8) in both indoor gymnasiums and outdoor field spaces.
Differentiated Movement Instruction:
Skill in adapting equipment, rules, and movement tasks to accommodate students with IEPs/504 plans, English Language Learners (ELL), motor delays, or adaptive PE needs.
Social-Emotional & Sportsmanship Coaching:
Ability to teach conflict resolution, personal responsibility, fair play, emotional regulation, and teamwork through structured games and physical challenges.
Communication & Safety Culture:
Strong communication skills with a firm commitment to student safety, active supervision, and building positive relationships with students, colleagues, and families.
Cultural Competency:
Sensitivity and responsiveness to diverse student backgrounds, ensuring a non-intimidating, inclusive movement culture where every student feels empowered to participate.
