PRIMARY PURPOSE

To assist the Physical Education teacher with instructional as well as physical needs of each student in the program. Assist in implementation of physical education programs, including self-help, behavior management, and instruction programs. Work under general supervision of principal and immediate direction of certified teacher.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Certification

Valid Texas educational aide certificate (Must meet one of these 3 options when hired)

At least 2 years of study at an institution of higher education

Obtained an associate's degree or higher

Meet a rigorous standard of quality through formal academic assessment required by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)

Special Knowledge/Skills

Ability to follow verbal and written instruction

Ability to communicate effectively

Knowledge of general office equipment

Experience

Some experience working with children.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
  • Instructional Support
  • Assist in planning and supervising student athletic experience activities. Help teacher prepare instructional materials and classroom/gymnasium displays. Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom/gymnasium. Help with inventory, care and maintenance of equipment. Instruct students under the direction of the teacher. Help teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports. Help teachers master and implement new instructional ideas and strategies. Help individual students and adapt or create material as necessary to meet those needs. Assist in establishing and maintaining high standards of student conduct and in establishing an effective climate for learning. Encourage students to think independently and to express original ideas.
  • Student Management

Assist students with physical disabilities according to their needs, including transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting or positioning. Assist students with physical needs and personal care including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene. Help manage behavior of students. This includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous student behavior as needed. Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs. Work with individual students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises assigned by teacher. Carry equipment and/or set up instruction area, indoors or out. Aid in demonstration of athletic requirements. Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom. This includes lunchroom, bus, and playground duty. When a substitute is unavailable, cover classroom assignments as needed.

Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.

Other

Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance. Participate in faculty meeting and special events as assigned. Maintain confidentiality. Attendance is an essential job function. Perform other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor. Other duties as assigned. Aides in demonstration of athletic requirements.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

Supervise students indoors or out, in small and large groups.

EQUIPMENT USED

Wheelchair lift, ramps, personal computer, copier, typewriter, audiovisual equipment, and adaptive equipment

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Maintain emotional control under stress; high stress, fast-paced. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. Regular heavy lifting of students. Possible exposure to blood products.
