The Preschool Director is responsible for the daily operation of the childcare center and for maintaining a safe, organized, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate environment for children. The Director provides leadership and supervision to staff, oversees classroom operations, maintains required records, supports compliance with California Community Care Licensing requirements, and communicates professionally with families. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Program Operations Oversee the daily operation of the preschool. Ensure classrooms are appropriately staffed and required teacher-child ratios are maintained. Coordinate staff schedules, classroom assignments, breaks, lunches, and coverage. Monitor attendance, enrollment, sign-in/sign-out procedures, and authorized pickups. Ensure daily schedules and routines are followed. Assist in classrooms when necessary to maintain appropriate supervision and staffing. Coordinate transportation procedures when applicable. Staff Supervision Supervise, support, and provide direction to teachers and other childcare staff. Ensure employees understand and follow center policies and procedures. Conduct staff meetings and provide ongoing coaching and training. Monitor staff attendance, punctuality, performance, and professional conduct. Address staff concerns and report significant performance or disciplinary issues to the Owner. Assist with interviewing, orientation, and training of new employees. Verify that staff files contain required documentation, training, and qualifications. Licensing & Compliance Maintain the facility in accordance with applicable California Community Care Licensing requirements. Maintain required child and staff records and ensure documents remain current. Prepare for and assist with licensing visits and inspections. Promptly notify the Owner of licensing concerns, unusual incidents, complaints, or potential violations. Ensure children's personal rights are protected. Ensure appropriate supervision of children at all times. Maintain required emergency and disaster procedures. Ensure mandated-reporting responsibilities are followed. Curriculum & Classroom Quality Monitor lesson plans and classroom activities. Ensure teachers provide developmentally appropriate learning experiences. Observe classrooms and provide guidance regarding classroom management. Ensure children receive appropriate opportunities for indoor/outdoor play, learning, meals, rest, and social development. Ensure classrooms and materials are clean, organized, safe, and age appropriate. Parent Communication Maintain professional and respectful communication with parents and guardians. Address routine parent questions and concerns. Communicate behavioral, developmental, health, or safety concerns appropriately. Refer serious complaints, enrollment disputes, or other significant concerns to the Owner. Protect confidential information regarding children, families, and employees. Health & Safety Conduct routine facility and classroom safety checks. Ensure proper sanitation and cleaning procedures are followed. Monitor illness and exclusion procedures. Ensure medications are handled according to center policy and applicable requirements. Ensure accidents and injuries are documented and parents are notified as required. Ensure playground and classroom equipment is maintained in safe condition. Administrative Responsibilities Maintain organized facility records. Monitor enrollment and classroom capacity. Review attendance and staffing records for accuracy. Maintain confidentiality of employee and child records. Assist with purchasing and maintaining adequate classroom and facility supplies. Complete reports and other administrative duties assigned by the Owner. Qualifications Must meet California Community Care Licensing Director qualification requirements applicable to the facility. Must satisfy applicable education, experience, health screening, background clearance, and training requirements. Current pediatric CPR/First Aid certification as required. Knowledge of child development and appropriate preschool practices. Knowledge of childcare health and safety procedures. Ability to supervise and provide direction to employees. Strong organizational and communication skills. Ability to maintain professional relationships with children, parents, staff, licensing representatives, and other agencies. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Physical Requirements Must be able to perform the physical duties associated with supervising young children, including standing and walking for extended periods, bending and reaching, assisting children as necessary, responding quickly during emergencies, and participating in indoor and outdoor activities. Accountability The Preschool Director is responsible for the day-to-day management of the center but remains accountable to the Owner. Significant licensing matters, employee disciplinary actions, enrollment/termination decisions, financial commitments, and changes to center policy should be communicated to or approved by the Owner as directed.
