Job Description

Position Summary First Baptist Child Development Center is seeking a dependable, organized, and experienced Assistant Director to support the daily operations of our faith-based early childhood program. The Assistant Director will work closely with the Director to maintain a safe, nurturing, organized, and compliant environment for children, families, and staff. This is an active, hands-on leadership position that includes administrative responsibilities, staff support, curriculum oversight, classroom monitoring, and maintaining children's records. The Assistant Director must be able to make sound decisions, solve problems independently, maintain confidentiality, and provide clear leadership. This individual will assume responsibility for the center's daily operations when the Director is absent and will provide classroom coverage when needed. Primary Responsibilities Support the Director with the center's daily administrative and operational needs Serve as the person in charge and oversee center operations when the Director is absent Maintain complete, accurate, confidential, and current children's files Monitor enrollment documents, health assessments, immunization records, emergency information, authorizations, and other required records Regularly audit children's files, identify missing or expired documents, and follow up with families Oversee the implementation of the center's approved curriculum Ensure teachers have the curriculum materials, resources, and guidance needed to plan appropriate classroom experiences Review lesson plans and help ensure teachers are consistently providing developmentally appropriate activities Monitor classrooms for active supervision, appropriate teacher-child interactions, cleanliness, safety, organization, and adherence to daily schedules Provide classroom coverage and assist with maintaining required staff-to-child ratios when needed Support, guide, and supervise teaching staff Assist with staff scheduling, attendance, training documentation, and personnel records Help ensure compliance with applicable North Carolina child care requirements and center policies Assist with family tours, enrollment inquiries, orientation, and parent concerns Communicate professionally and respectfully with families, staff, church leadership, and outside agencies Assist with staff meetings, training, coaching, and performance documentation Help prepare the center for monitoring visits, inspections, and compliance reviews Respond calmly and appropriately to emergencies, staffing challenges, classroom concerns, and other unexpected situations Protect confidential information involving children, families, staff, and center operations Perform other duties necessary to support the Director and the center's daily operation Required Qualifications Previous experience working in a licensed or regulated child care facility Previous child care leadership, administrative, or supervisory experience Knowledge of North Carolina child care requirements Experience maintaining children's records and required documentation Experience supporting or overseeing the implementation of an early childhood curriculum Current North Carolina child care background-check qualifying letter NC Early Childhood Credential NC Early Childhood Administration Credential or the ability to meet the administrative qualifications required for the position Current CPR and First Aid certification or the ability to obtain certification Strong organizational, communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills Ability to work independently, take initiative, and follow through on assigned responsibilities Basic proficiency with email, Microsoft Word, spreadsheets, and electronic child care management systems Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive matters professionally Ability to work Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Ability to work in classrooms serving children from infancy through age five Ability to meet the physical demands of an early childhood environment Preferred Qualifications Associate degree or higher in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a related field At least two years of leadership experience in a child care center Experience with Brightwheel or a similar child care management system Experience managing staff schedules, enrollment records, compliance documentation, and family communication Experience reviewing lesson plans and supporting teachers with curriculum implementation Familiarity with faith-based early childhood education Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate is trustworthy, organized, approachable, professional, and confident. They communicate clearly, exercise good judgment, take initiative, and follow through on responsibilities. They must be able to support staff while also holding them accountable to center policies and expectations. This person should be comfortable stepping into classrooms, assisting wherever needed, and leading the center calmly and effectively when the Director is unavailable. First Baptist Child Development Center is a ministry of First Baptist Church of Clayton. Applicants must be comfortable working in and supporting a Christian, faith-based environment.
