Our teachers create safe, nurturing, developmentally appropriate learning environments where children are encouraged to explore, build relationships, develop independence, and grow in confidence. The Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality care and education to young children, planning and implementing developmentally appropriate learning experiences, maintaining a safe and welcoming classroom, communicating with families, and working collaboratively with other JEC staff. ResponsibilitiesClassroom Teaching & Curriculum Plan and implement engaging, developmentally appropriate activities that support children's physical, social-emotional, cognitive, and language development. Create a balance of child-directed exploration, play, teacher-guided activities, and open-ended learning experiences. Follow Alaska's Early Learning Guidelines and accepted principles of early childhood education. Encourage children's curiosity, creativity, reasoning, problem-solving, and independence. Support language and literacy development through reading, conversation, storytelling, vocabulary development, and follow-up activities. Incorporate math, science, health, nutrition, and other learning experiences naturally into daily routines and activities. Provide opportunities for both small- and large-group activities, including outdoor learning and playground experiences. Recognize and respond to individual children's developmental needs and interests. Use positive guidance and redirection to help children develop self-regulation, social skills, and positive relationships. Encourage age-appropriate self-help skills and independence. Model appropriate, respectful, and caring behavior at all times. Child Safety & Supervision Maintain a safe, healthy, and welcoming classroom environment. Actively supervise children and maintain awareness of required child-to-staff ratios at all times. Follow all applicable municipal child care licensing requirements and JEC policies and procedures. Conduct daily health and safety checks and maintain awareness of children's medical conditions and allergies. Support emergency preparedness and participate in required fire and earthquake drills. Ensure children are appropriately supervised and supported during transitions, meals, outdoor play, and other daily routines. Classroom Management & Teamwork Work collaboratively with classroom teachers, aides, floaters, substitutes, volunteers, and administrative staff. Help establish and maintain consistent classroom routines, schedules, expectations, and transitions. Provide guidance and direction to classroom support staff and volunteers as appropriate. Communicate classroom needs and concerns to administration and participate in resolving issues constructively. Contribute to a positive, respectful, and collaborative staff culture. Participate in staff meetings, trainings, planning, and professional development. Family Communication Build positive, respectful relationships with children's families. Communicate regularly with parents and caregivers about children's experiences, progress, and needs. Respond to parent questions and concerns in a timely and supportive manner. Document relevant communications with families. Work with families to understand and support individualized goals for their children. Share observations and information about children's development and progress. Maintain confidentiality of child, family, and staff information. Observation & Documentation Observe and document children's behavior, development, progress, and growth. Maintain accurate classroom and child records. Record attendance and meal counts accurately and in a timely manner. Complete required daily documentation and communications. Complete timesheets accurately and on time. Center Support Prepare breakfast and afternoon snacks according to CACFP and JEC guidelines as needed. Help maintain clean and orderly classrooms and common areas. Assist with dishes, toys, laundry, and other classroom cleaning as needed. Complete classroom opening and closing responsibilities according to established checklists. Support other classrooms with breaks and other needs as directed. Open and/or close the building as needed.

Qualifications Required:

Must be at least 18 years old. High school diploma, GED, or equivalent. Willingness to obtain a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or equivalent qualification (CDL or SEED Level 6) within 18 months of hire. Three professional or character references. Ability to obtain and maintain all certifications and clearances required for employment in an Alaska licensed child care program.

Preferred:

Associate or bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Early Childhood Development, or a related field. Previous professional experience working with young children. Experience working in a licensed early childhood education setting. Required Certifications & Clearances Current First Aid/CPR certification, or willingness to obtain it. Alaska-approved Health and Safety training. Alaska-approved Mandatory Reporter training. Current background check and fingerprint clearance required by municipal child care licensing. Proof of employment eligibility as required by federal law. Professional Development JEC teachers are expected to participate in ongoing professional development and complete at least 24 hours of continuing education annually, outside of regular work hours as required by the program. Additional Information This is an at-will position with a 90-day introductory period.
