Position Summary :

The Child Development Specialist is responsible for helping to develop and maintain a strong foundation for the Parents As Teachers (PAT) team in Cal-Learn. Mentors and trains all Cal-Learn staff in building their knowledge, skills, and abilities in the area of child development and developmental screening. Is highly trained and skilled in the delivery of PAT and supports the fidelity of the program. The primary location of this position is in South Los Angles with occasional travel to the San Fernando and Antelope Valleys.

Essential Duties:

Supports staff development by providing training, coaching, and technical assistance on child development milestones, developmental screening, and strategies that promote children's cognitive, physical, and social-emotional development. Provides training to all staff and individualized coaching and support as needed. Provides training on the Ages & Stages Questionnaires (ASQ) to ensure staff are prepared to plan and conduct developmental screenings, score and interpret results, communicate outcomes with families, and identify appropriate follow-up activities and services. Trains staff to use ASQ and PAT recommended activities and strategies to support individual children's development. Works with case managers to connect families with appropriate child development resources and service providers. Conducts and coordinates developmental screenings and assessments for children participating in the CLRN Program. Observes home visits and developmental screenings, provides feedback to staff and management, and accompanies staff as needed to model developmentally appropriate, child-centered interactions and screening practices. Provides parent education and support through individual and group interactions, workshops, and hands-on activities focused on child development, positive parenting, and strategies that promote children's learning and development. Models parent-child activities and strategies for case managers and parents to implement with their children. Develops and maintains partnerships with Regional Centers, public schools, Early Care and Education (ECE) programs, Head Start, and other child development service providers to facilitate effective referrals and linkages for families. Keeps staff informed of relevant changes in laws, regulations, and practices related to special education and developmental disabilities. Serves as a liaison among families, staff, and community providers to facilitate access to appropriate services and resources. Coordinates and facilitates monthly Group Connections in collaboration with supervisors and case managers. Collects, maintains, and manages related documentation and participation data and prepares reports for management and public relations staff. Works closely with the Program Director and Supervisors to provide ongoing consultation and support to the case managers, including assistance with complex or high-risk cases. Maintains a caseload of high-risk clients and provides direct services, case consultation, and support as assigned. Assists case managers in addressing the needs of high-risk clients; documents service activities, and monitors and tracks client progress. Participates in team meetings and staff communications to ensure staff are informed of upcoming events, trainings, program activities, and other relevant information.

Requirements:

B.A. Degree in Child Development, Early Childhood Education or another related field. Minimum two (2) years' experience working with children and their families. Willingness to complete the Parents as Teachers certification or comprehensive PAT training within two months of hire. Ability to adhere to Cal Learn program guidelines, policies and protocols and actively work toward achieving the goals of the program. Experience working with families from diverse age, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Culturally sensitive and knowledgeable of the community being served. Effective written and oral communication skills to articulate concepts/ ideas and write notes and reports. General computer skills, including Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power point, etc.) Bilingual English /Spanish preferred. Must have a reliable automobile for use on the job. Valid driver's license, satisfactory driving record and proof of insurance. TB clearance to be renewed every two years.
