Academy Assistant Director - Job Description The Academy Assistant Director at Early Childhood Academy is a hands-on leader responsible for ensuring the quality of care and education in every classroom, every day. This role focuses on daily classroom execution, curriculum implementation, licensing compliance, and teacher development, working in partnership with the Academy Director to deliver a best-in-class child care experience. The Assistant Director is a visible presence throughout the academy — supporting educators, ensuring routines are consistent, and nurturing a warm, responsive environment for children to learn and grow.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Daily Classroom Quality & Child Supervision Ensure that every classroom delivers a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment for young children. Observe daily routines, transitions, meals, and play to ensure they are consistent, developmentally appropriate, and aligned with center expectations. Support teachers in creating inviting and purposeful learning environments tailored to each age group. Model quality interactions, curriculum implementation, and child guidance strategies as needed in the classroom on a regular basis. Curriculum & Program Oversight Ensure lesson plans are in place, aligned to standards, and implemented with high standards. Coach educators to provide age-appropriate activities that support all areas of development. Help educators use observations and documentation to inform individualized instruction and developmental goals. Foster consistency in classroom routines, daily schedules, and center-wide programming. Compliance & Licensing Support Partner with the Academy Director to ensure compliance with all DCYF and Health Department regulations. Conduct classroom audits, safety checks, and documentation reviews regularly. Ensure classrooms are fully prepared for unannounced visits or inspections. Train and retrain staff on compliance protocols, safety procedures, and supervision policies. Ensures bi-annual audits are completed at a minimum of Child Files and Staff In-Service Records for accuracy and completion (suggested around time of conferences for children/families). Teacher Development & Support Provide feedback and hands-on support during classroom walkthroughs. Assist with onboarding new teachers and orienting them to quality expectations. Support conflict resolution, classroom management, and team collaboration. Ensures bi-annual audits of staff develop profiles to ensure all staff are up-to-date and active with courses completed for Parent Aware requirements on a regular basis. Family Communication & Support Support daily communication with families regarding classroom happenings, child progress, and any concerns. Help facilitate parent-teacher conferences and curriculum nights. Step in to support family questions or concerns with professionalism and care. Collaborate with teachers and families to implement ICCPP (Individual Child Care Program Plans).
Working Conditions:
The position expectations outlined above will be performed primarily in your assigned classroom, on the playground, or within the Academy. Staff must be able to perform all job duties and expectations daily. This includes but is not limited to: dressing for all temperatures and weather, indoor and outdoor play (in all weather), sitting on the floor, frequent bending, standing for extended periods of time, getting messy, lifting and carrying children, and other expected or unexpected conditions. Qualifications Associate or Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or related field preferred. Minimum 2 years of classroom experience in a licensed child care center, with demonstrated leadership or mentoring responsibilities. Strong understanding of child development, curriculum planning, and licensing requirements. Ability to coach and inspire educators to deliver high-quality instruction and care.
