Substitute Teachers play an important role in maintaining a safe, nurturing, and engaging learning environment when regularly scheduled staff members are absent. The ideal candidate enjoys working with young children, is flexible and dependable, and has the ability to step into an established classroom routine while providing consistent, high quality care and supervision.
Responsibilities:
Follow lesson plans, classroom routines, and activities established by the Lead Teacher. Provide attentive supervision and maintain the health, safety, and well being of children throughout the school day. Participate with the assigned class in all scheduled activities, including enrichment classes such as music. Use positive, developmentally appropriate classroom management strategies. Build positive and respectful relationships with children while fostering confidence, independence, curiosity, and a love of learning. Support the established curriculum and classroom expectations provided by the Director and Lead Teacher. Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming classroom environment. Assist with classroom setup, cleanup, and the proper storage of equipment and materials. Complete assigned opening, closing, and classroom cleaning responsibilities. Communicate professionally and respectfully with children, families, teachers, and administration. Follow all Early Childhood Center policies, procedures, and safety requirements. Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Director or Head of Staff.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Experience working with young children strongly preferred. Two or more years of experience in early childhood education preferred. Child Development Associate Credential, Associate Degree, Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree, or coursework in Early Childhood Education or a related field preferred. New York State Teacher Certification preferred. Current CPR and First Aid Certification preferred. Must be dependable and able to accept substitute assignments, including assignments that may become available on short notice. Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills. Ability to develop positive working relationships with children, families, teachers, and administration. Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and respond effectively to changing classroom needs. Ability to work effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Professional, approachable, flexible, and able to take initiative while working collaboratively with staff.
Physical Requirements:
Candidates must be able to actively participate in an early childhood classroom environment.
This includes the ability to:
Lift and carry up to 40 pounds. Work both indoors and outdoors. Sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel, and move between standing and floor level throughout the day. Maintain physical and visual proximity to children to provide appropriate supervision. See and hear sufficiently to monitor children and maintain a safe environment. Participate in age appropriate indoor and outdoor activities with children.
Schedule:
This is an as needed substitute position. Work is offered based on staff absences and program needs. Assignments may be scheduled in advance or may become available on short notice. Hours and days will vary based on the needs of the Early Childhood Center. We are looking for Substitute Teachers who genuinely enjoy working with young children and understand the importance of providing a safe, consistent, and positive experience for every child in their care.
