POSITION SUMMARY
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Food Prep Assistant works under the supervision of the Childcare Coordinator and is responsible for assisting with the preparation and service of daily meals and snacks in accordance with USDA guidelines and policies. This position helps maintain a safe, sanitary, and organized kitchen environment while ensuring meals and snacks are prepared and served according to program requirements.

MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist with preparing and serving nutritious meals and snacks in accordance with USDA guidelines and procedures. Ensure required food components are provided as applicable, including: Grain Vegetables Fruit Meat or meat alternatives Fluid milk Follow all USDA guidelines and policies, procedures, recordkeeping requirements, and program guidelines. Prepare designated meals in a timely manner. Follow proper food preparation, handling, storage, and sanitation practices at all times. Maintain a safe, clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen and food preparation area. Clean and sanitize kitchen surfaces, floors, utensils, equipment, and other food service areas as needed. Properly use, clean, and maintain kitchen equipment and supplies. Monitor food and kitchen supplies and communicate ordering or replenishment needs to the Childcare Coordinator. Follow all applicable health and safety regulations and assist in maintaining the kitchen and food service areas in compliance with health code requirements. Assist with receiving, storing, rotating, and maintaining food supplies to ensure proper food safety and minimize waste. Follow established procedures for preventing cross-contamination and managing food allergies and other dietary requirements. Respond appropriately to safety and emergency situations. Work cooperatively with childcare staff and other Y staff to support a positive environment for children and families. Perform other duties as assigned.
SECONDARY TASKS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Serve as a mandatory reporter of suspected abuse or neglect of children, elders, and individuals with disabilities, as required by Oregon law. Model and promote the YMCA's core values of Honesty, Caring, Respect, and Responsibility. Maintain confidentiality and professional conduct when working with children, families, and Y staff.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILL LEVEL AT JOB ENTRY
Skill Level at
Entry:
Intermediate Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and established food service procedures. Ability to work effectively as part of a team and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, children, and families. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally. Ability to maintain accurate attention to detail when preparing meals and following program requirements. Basic ability to work with quantities, measurements, and food preparation instructions. Ability to prioritize tasks and complete assigned responsibilities in a timely manner. Ability to maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary work environment. Ability to respond appropriately to safety and emergency situations. Ability to work safely around kitchen equipment and follow established safety procedures. Previous food preparation or food service experience is preferred but may not be required.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Must successfully pass a background check. Must be enrolled in and maintain enrollment in the Oregon Department of Education's Central Background Registry as required for employment. Complete New Staff Orientation within 90 days of hire. Obtain CPR/AED/First Aid certification within 60 days of hire. Complete Child Sexual Abuse Prevention training within 90 days of hire. Complete Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect (RRCAN) training as required. Complete Introduction to Child Care Health and Safety (ICCHS) training as required. Obtain a valid Oregon Food Handler's Certificate within 3 days of hire. Complete any additional training required by the YMCA, Oregon Department of Education, or other applicable regulatory agencies.
