JOB POSITION SUMMARY

This position is responsible for assisting the lead teacher with the educational preschool programs. Work hours/locations are subject to change, but will typically be Monday- Friday, 9:00 a.m. -4:00 p.m.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following : Assist the lead instructor in teaching a group of preschool children. Activities will include circle time, reading, curriculum stations, outside play time and snack time. Provide customer service to patrons of the Recreation Department. Monitor and maintain cleanliness of facility. Perform emergency and rescue procedures. Fill out reports and file paperwork as needed. Open and close facility as assigned. Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines Age 18 or older with interest in and some experience working with preschool aged children. Current CPR and First Aid required within 3 months of hiring. Food Worker's Card required within 6 weeks of hiring. Have written results of a current Mantoux TB skin test before starting work. Pass criminal background check performed by the Washington State Department of Children, Youth & Families. Verification of identity and United States work authorization must be complete as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act.

Knowledge of:

Administering basic CPR, AED and First Aid Basic child development Ability to: Adhere to expectations as outlined in employee handbook. Administer first aid and CPR. Be aware of and adjust to changing surroundings. Communicate effectively verbally and in writing with children and parents, coworkers and community patrons. Communicate verbally in person, via telephone and across distances. Complete 30 hours STARS Basic Licensing Guidebook Training or meet the education exemption as outlined by the Washington State Department of Children, Youth & Families (within 6 months of hire). Establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship in a team environment with supervisors and other staff. Follow verbal and written instructions and learn operations and procedures. Display a positive and energetic attitude. Learn and apply new skills. Lift, move and handle a minimum of 50 pounds. Maintain clear, concise and accurate records and report on items that need attention. Maintain professionalism, reliability and maturity. Monitor the safety of children. Move over rough ground, including outdoor playground. Provide basic problem-solving skills. React efficiently and tactfully with the public and to be capable of enforcing regulations firmly and impartially. Recognize what needs to be done and the willingness to accomplish such work without direction on each task. Sit and/or stand for extended periods. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus in order to maintain surveillance of students and employees. Stoop, kneel, twist, bend, crouch or crawl. Use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects or equipment. Walk up and down stairs.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is performed in recreation facilities, childcare environments, parks, playgrounds, aquatic facilities, and outdoor program sites. This position may be called upon for emergencies at times other than regularly scheduled hours.

Physical requirements may include:

Moving throughout recreation facilities and outdoor environments. Supervising and participating in recreational activities and field trips. Lifting, carrying, and moving equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds. Communicating effectively in person, by telephone, electronically and in group settings. Operating standard office equipment and computer systems. Exposure to noise, weather conditions, and active recreation environments. Exposure to bodily fluids including, but not limited to, blood, feces, urine and vomit.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

This position reports directly to the Recreation Programmer, Coordinator and Recreation Leader II and must demonstrate strong organizational skills, leadership ability, and a high level of responsibility.
