Literacy Specialist (part-time) Birches School 2026-2027 Birches School seeks an enthusiastic, knowledgeable Literacy Specialist beginning in September 2026.

Summary of Position :
The Literacy Specialist is a skilled teacher of phonics, fluency, and comprehension. They will work primarily with students in grades K-3, providing instruction, intervention, and assessment in one-on-one and group settings. Experience with a diversity of learning profiles is essential, as is an understanding of educational evaluations and learning plans. In collaboration with classroom teachers, this position will administer and interpret literacy assessments to determine progress and identify students in need of intervention. This is a part-time, hourly position (approximately 10 hours per week). Birches seeks teaching faculty who are interested in fully participating in the life and activities of a highly engaging elementary and middle school and who will help further Birches' mission. Successful candidates will exhibit a strong work ethic, cultural competence, strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to inspire young people.
Primary Responsibilities :
Provide specific, targeted literacy instruction to individuals and small groups Identify students in need of supplemental instruction through observation and assessments Collaborate with classroom teachers to adjust and implement standards for best practices regarding literacy instruction, assessments, and targeted intervention Serve as a resource for families, providing ideas for tutors, evaluations, and summer programs
Qualifications :
MA degree in education with a concentration in Reading, Literacy, or a related field Minimum of 5 years teaching and/or intervention experience Experience with various literacy curricula, including Sounds-Write Expert knowledge of learning differences and brain-based teaching and learning principles Demonstrated experience with multicultural and anti-bias teaching strategies and materials that reflect cultural competence Interested applicants should submit a letter of interest and resume as a PDF, along with any other supporting materials in standard formats, to employment@birchesschool.org.
